I was asked to give a fair price on this rifle. What's it worth?

I'm going to say $450ish to somebody who wants it.

Far less to a disinterested buyer.

You need to include more info
build date
round count
scope manufacturer

A quick look at the completed auctions on gun broker
Listings run from 1200-2800, avg 1500, for a Sako Mannlicher

YMMV

Good luck

Thanks. It’s got a leupold vx-2 on it now. No idea of round count

The owner is no longer with us.

I wish. I’d like to be honest with the widow and give her a fair price but I don’t want to pay what a gun shop might charge either.

30-06 is desirable to me anyway. I have several other rifles in the same round.

Not sure how 30-06 affects value?

If this is an estate purchase, be honest.
A gun shop will offer 40-45% of retail
Do more home work, the prices I listed did not differentiate between what was asked and what actually sold.

So is it a Sako action or is it just a standard post war Mauser action built up as a sporter?

I think you're going to find those two things at opposite ends of the price spectrum. The 50's,60's and 70's saw large amounts of rifles imported by "recognized" brands names that really weren't anything special. I'm not disrespecting the gun and do not trade in them with any regularity.

As for the scope, this gun any gun, whatever is bolted to it adds $0 to the value of the gun. Scopes, slings, whatever.

Looks like some pertinent information here, even if not pricing

Yeah I figured the scope adds no value. I just have no idea about the gun.

I’ll try and gather some more info on any marking on the receiver.

Look at this

I'm pretty sure that is an H&R 301 Ultra, built on a M98 action.

I'd be interested in seeing more/better pics

I think you are going to find this to be the case:
"Harrington & Richardson's large action Ultrarifle mostly used FN Mauser actions and was available in .270, .30-06, 7mm RM, and .300 Win, I believe. Very late in the run H&R switched to the less expensive Zastava Mauser 98."

I can't see the pics on that site without joining, but the version built on L61 Sako action he is describing as polished, which the rifle in your pics does not appear to be.

I think that is going to be an M98 action, in a Fajen stock, with a Douglas barrel assembled by H&R, using a Sako trigger group.

I don't think I've ever seen a Sako mannlicher style stocked rifle that didn't use a barrel band .

Thanks. I requested additional pics of the receiver. I'll post them up asap.

also the bottom of the magazine area/floor plate.

if it is a legit sako action it will have the importer markings there.

alot of the older imported sakos were marked there. such as the abrecrombie and fitch era and other importers over the years.

the action markings would be very key in this case.

Someone else snagged it. Makes my decision easier I guess.

Thanks all.
