Anyone have an idea for removing the back coating from a Cold Steel recon tanto that won't melt the handle material or take forever to do?

Citristrip paint stripper works well.

Relevant to my interests. I love the knife. Not crazy about the coating. If it were smooth it wouldn’t bother me.

It's gonna rust...

None of my carbon blades are rusted. They require different care.

I would try aircraft remover.

That stuff would melt the rubber handle.

Any ideas on something that wouldn't?

Thanks

Probably but is fairly thick as opposed to being runny. It could be brushed on fairly easily I would think without getting it on the handle.

I have a Recon Tanto factory 2nd that I got in the mid '90s due to a small bubble in the coating.  I like mine the way it is but you could try taping off the handle with aluminum foil at the hilt and use the solvents that others have stated.

This.

I've used this on much more durable coating to good effect.

Citristrip.

I applied it to a buskin, waited 10mins, wiped off the coating like it was nothing.

You won't get easier with a more toxic product, you will just get a more toxic product.

Seriously.....just try it at least.

wire wheel on a grinder works better

Back in the 1990s I got a Recon Scout with the craptastic epoxy coating.  I wrapped the blade in paper towels & poured methylene chloride on it & soaked it, keeping the solvent off the rubber handle.  The solvent caused enough separation I used a single edge razor blade & the epoxy came off in huge chunks.

YMMV, but it worked. Acetone may work & is easier to buy these days.

The Carbon V does stain if you don’t stay on top of things, or leave the knife in a sheath—but my knife, including Randall’s & Fallkniven are tools, so I don’t care. The exception is the Chris Reeve stuff not made anymore.

I’ve stripped some coatings off of knives before.  The coatings sometimes obscure blemishes in the steel from the grind.
