Hey guys, I've got a P07 that was milled for an optic then Cerakoted for corrosion resistance. While the mill job and Cerakote application were phenomenal, I seriously misjudged the color burnt bronze would turn out to be and I'm looking to take it in a less gucci direction, as the stuff is halfway to gold. I know re-Cerakoting over Cerakote is usually a non-starter, but how does a krylon/rustoleum cover-up hold up? Does it flake terribly? I'm fine with holster and other contact wear, I just want it to be less eye-catching and not come off in huge flakes as I larp around the basement.

I too don't like the tendency of paint to flake. I think natural finish wear looks good, but a chipped finish looks hideous. I see lots of freshly painted rifles on the forums here, but not many after several years of wear...which tells me they probably get repainted on the regular. I expect you'll get much better results if you pay attention to your prep work and have a toothy or porous substrate to hold paint.

Here's what I do:
Wash the part with hot water and dish soap (if possible)
Degrease with acetone
Paint the item, being careful to keep the coats light
Wait until the paint's handling time is elapsed, usually 20 minutes for spray paint
Bake the part in an oven at 170F for 60 to 90 minutes
Wait until the part is cool before handling

I've gotten good results with spray paint this way. It doesn't hold up that well on plastic, but on anodized aluminum and parkerized steel does much better.
