Just picked up a ps90 and im looking for the best HD ammo recommendation, and i know the best is very subjective especially with this caliber.  I

bought this for my wife to use, she is small framed 5’1” 100lbs, so the lightweight/compactness is the biggest factor and i want her to be comfortable

with it and use it.  I already have a bit of the American eagle as well as the 40g ss197 v-max (i also own a five-seven) but i was wondering about the

27g stuff, is it a step up or down for HD use.  The elite offerings are too expensive at this point and have no doubt they would be better served in this

roll.Thanks for the input

American Eagle shouldn’t be in consideration

SS190>SS192>SS198>SS197

SS190 is pretty expensive and not really necessary for most folks.  SS192 is an excellent choice but can be slightly pricy and SS198 is, for practical purposes, it’s equivalent and is much more readily available and more reasonably priced.  SS197 is ok but really wouldn’t be my first choice.  If you have a suppressor that changes the dynamic a little and SB193 would be my go to choice but it’s pricey.

I know Buffman has done tests of the various other options like Elite ammo but I don’t really care to mess around with it as SS190 is my preferred round and Elite seems so gimmicky.

My suggestion would be to pick up some SS198 and go with that keeping an eye out for a decent price on a box or two of SS192.  Shoot the SS198 for practice to get her used to it and just plan on using that until you pick up some SS192.

Sgammo has ss198 I’ll give that a try, the American eagle was more for plinking and brass.  I was just worried the 27g would be too light and i will look at the 190 and 192.  thanks

IMO If you can't source SS190, and want factory SS198LF will work, but remember it underpenetrates by 3-4".  If you want one of the copper wonders, it's either EA T6B, or the Vanguard Black Dragon Fang. 3rd party ballistic testing confirmed those 2 along with EA's DevastaTOR 3.0 were some of the best performing 5.7 rounds.

The way I see it SS190 is the “best” choice but unless you are specifically concerned with penetration aspects then it probably doesn’t matter.  Kinda like shooting 5.56 if you are concerned about the ability to meet specific penetration criteria then M855 is the “best” choice but for most purposes M193 is more than adequate.

If the OP is concerned about his wife having to defend herself against bad guys with vests then maybe worth it to explore the other ammo options but apart from that it’s maybe searching for a 100% solution when a 90% solution is good enough.

Nah... I wouldn’t worry too much about it being light, it’s still a good round.

In the off chance your wife ever has to use it the fact that has the thing and knows how to use it is way more important than finding the “perfect” ammo.  None of it from FN is junk, the AE has been noted for having problems by some people so that isn’t a good choice, but most of the rest is fine.  I wouldn’t use Ss195, 195 or 196 but I think at this point they are scarce enough that they are more for the cartridge collectors and you are unlikely to run across any unless you are looking.

Thanks for all the replies. Nothing is impossible but realistically I don’t think intruders with armor are likely more so would be a tweeker.  It’s looking like i will shoot up my AE and start investing in ss198 for defensive purposes and 197 for all around since i can find it in stores easier.  I think i was over thinking it, the longest shot possible inside my house would be about 35ft, with 50 rounds onboard, skill and comfort of the weapon she will be fine.  With all the new 5.7 firearms my guess is there will be more ammunition choices coming, thanks again

The American Eagle is garbage. Bought 200 rounds for range ammo. First round out of the box the bullet came out of the case in my hand. Many ftf and fte issues. Will not be buying it again.

Personally I'd use SS197; out of the PS90 it's clocking ~2100fps, and provides reliable and violent expansion / fragmentation with 12"+ penetration.

Otherwise, SS198.

You can get really down in the weeds chasing boutique loadings, but I’d just use 198.

This.

Also don’t forget Speer’s new 5.7 Gold Dot should be shipping Q2 or Q3 of 2020.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the new Speer round wasn’t suitable for the PS90.

That’s what the early reports have stated.

Plus, the published ballistics aren’t particularly impressive.

Sounds to me that SS19LF is still the king of the civilian market for HD, & Carry.

I'm looking forward to testing and results out of the new Gold Dot offering. If it performs as it does in other calibers it should be a great HD round.

There was some talk a few years ago that SS195 was being discontinued?  Really didn’t pay much attention as SS198 became readily available on the civilian market for basically the same price and offered the same bullet but at slightly higher velocity.  Haven’t looked back at it since and SS198 has remained available since.  I guess if you are speaking technically SS198 is still labeled as LE restricted by FN but given that you can buy it for reasonable prices by the case from multiple vendors I would consider it the king of the “normal” market.  My feeling is that keeping it labeled LE restricted is, at this point, just a little marketing tool that FN uses to justify a slightly higher price and up the appeal.
