I have an opportunity to purchase from the original owner a HK91A4 with fixed stock and polygonal bore.  Gun purchased in 1977, still has original receipt.  Receiver is marked Made in Germany, excl. for SACO, Arl. Va. 22 209, Kal. .308.  What would be a fair offer?  Includes 2 20 round magazines and sling.  Owner claims to have fired only 40 rounds through rifle.  Asking price is $3500 with magazines, sling and 140 rounds .308 ammo.

I honestly wouldn't pay more than $2500 for that gun if I really wanted it.

The asking price seems to be on the high end of what I have found on Gunbroker and other places.  The polygonal bore may justify a premium???

There aren't a lot that come up on brokerage/auction sites to really get a feel for the going/acceptable price on them, with that said, $3K seems a bit steep
to me also.

Guess this is a case for buyer's choice, is it worth that much to you?

Over the years questions like yours have come up on the gun boards.  Poly barreled HK91's were imported for a couple years I think in 1977and 78.
Will have to check to be sure.  It has been said that only 200 were imported so its a somewhat rare version of the weapon.  I believe that the face
of the bolt head is not flat and looks like a 33/93 bolt head in that there is a raised circle around the firing pin hole on the poly-barreled HK 91's.
I believe I have seen that much asked for one over the years.  Don't know if they ever sold for the asking price though.

Thanks for the insight on the bolt.  I am going to try to inspect the weapon this weekend and will look to see if the bolt is correct.  He has the original receipt and price sheet that shows the original catalog number 1-10040 that reflects the limited production polygon bore.

I have a poly 91.  Does not shoot any better.  People who don't know HKs wont give you any extra for it.  HK nuts like me will give you a little above market.  My opinion, it is not worth a lot more than market price.

Seems to be the general consensus.    Going to offer $2k and see if I get kicked out of his house.  This owner wants a $4500 for his:

Have been into HKs for almost 40 years now. A really nice 91 brings about 2500 these days. The poly bore might add a little to it. If you like the rifle, Id say no more than 2700. The mags are cheap as in under 5 dollars each now.

I'm an idiot.  I read this as a 93 on my phone.  I was in disbelief of $5 93 mags.

I was able to inspect the HK91 today.  Bolt carrier is marked HK 9/75,  Bolt head is marked 8/75 with letters CG???  (bad picture), no markings on the locking piece--is that normal??  Serial number is A012xxx made in 1976.  There is a blemish on the receiver where the owner at one point had used an electric pencil type engraver to scribe his ss#.  What a piss poor place to have done that.  He had it removed and looks to be refinished fairly well.  What impact on valuation will that have??  The bolt head is correct for polygonal bore.  The bore is polygonal.

Unmarked locking piece is correct as far as I know.   There's probably a divot on one side.   I think it is from a hardness test but not sure.

Once somebody refinishes a gun, it becomes a shooter and no longer collectable to me.

I definitely wouldn't give him 3500 in this market, and 2K is a very fair price, considering.

$3500 is WAY over inflated IMO BEFORE I read he electro penned his SS# on it and then refinished it, owner took a steaming dump on the collectibility at that moment and made it a shooter grade gun. 2k maybe 2100, only someone huffing HK paint goes to 3k.

Looking on my PC and not my phone, I believe I can see where he engraved it on the trigger housing only. I read OP state "receiver" and took him to mean the actual receiver. Still, the price is high IMO, but I am also competing in the same market so there is that...

I screwed up when I said receiver.  The blem is on the trigger housing.  Any ideas on the cost of an original correct replacement?  I can use that cost to negotiate the price.

As I read it, trigger housing (only) was refinished, which is really no big deal if one were to pursue it - nice original S/F housings are out there.

Any idea on the cost of an original S/F housing?  The overall condition looks great.  I am new to HKs but recently puchased a PTR9CT to satisfy my desire for an MP5.   I would like to add an HK to my collection and I think I can pick this up for around $2300.

That's more like it.   Forget the trigger housing.   There are "clipped and pinned" housings that look and fit much better.
My first stop for anything HK is RTG.

Clipped and pinned trigger housings available are surplus g3 sef, not hk91 sf. Those are not easy to find, and won’t be cheap.

I’d pay $2000-$2200 at most.

That's what I thought after trying to find one.  I took a pass on this one for now, may check back with the owner if he still hasn't sold it in a month or so.  Maybe the price will be more negotiable then.

If you want a hk 91, I wouldn’t let the trigger housing deter you, unless you want a pristine collectable. But it is a blem and should lower the price below a similar 91. I haven’t priced them in years, but in the low $2Ks, like others have said, spunds about right.
