I'm looking for someone to pin/weld a titanium muzzle device for an ultralight build and can't seem to find a shop willing to do it. Any ideas? Thanks.

I know it should be tig welded but you would think a small tap with a mig would hold a detent pin just fine? I honestly do not know about that. I have done dozens of standard steel ones but never titanium.

@Tigwelder1971 ?

I need that done too.

Ti sucks.

It is a "reactive metal", sensitive to oxygen. Once heated the protective coating is breached and oxygen plays havoc with shit.

Clean, clean, and clean components/tungsten/filler rods. Shielding gas coverage is pertinent. I turn those projects down. Ti components are not cheap..

Damn, well that's what I was afraid of. Guess I'm better off getting a 16" barrel.

@unclemoak may have interest.

And the guy has mad skills. Last I read he does ~300 P/W jobs in a year. Let's see if he responds here.

Would you use steel Mig wire on Aluminum?
Because it would work about as well on titanium...

No but like I said, I have never done it so I tagged a real welder.

AWS A5.16 ErTi-2 would likely cover the application, MIG/TIG.

I'm not a welder so I have no idea what any of this means, but I do appreciate the help!

Filler material type, whether MIG wire or TIG rod, generally a "one does it all" for Ti grades.

17-4 is a good choice.

There you go. Doubt that you'll find better craftsmanship.

Did you try ADCO?

Just braze it.  No one will know the difference.

TIG welding titanium requires a shielding gas chamber and is a PIA.

Not when it's a pin in a blind hole. The normal gas lens provides more than ample shielding.

Just get a small tank of 99% Ar or He. Get a small piece of CP Ti weld wire.   Maybe the flash hider is 6-4 - CP wire will work just fine for this and be cheaper, a little.
Make a foil cup if you want over the nozzle to help flood the shield gas.
It’s not that bad, especially like the guy above said as you don’t need to worry about back side shield gas.

It’s not like you’re welding plate for a submarine hull or a wing on a fighter jet.
