Well, after doing quite a bit of research, I ordered my first Sharps today.
Shiloh 1874 Sporter #3
45-70
Military (straight) stock
Military Buttplate
Standard Wood
Color Case Hardened
30" Heavy OCT Barrel
Brass Escutcheons
Pewter Forearm Tip
Semi Buckhorn Rear Sight
MVA #108 Midrange Tang Sight
Shiloh #111 Front Sight
I was torn between the "pistol grip" butt stock and the straight military stock, and I ended up deciding on the straight. It looks more 'traditional' to me, and has always been what I imagined a Sharps to have. This will be my first black powder rifle, and first rifle I plan to reload for, so I went with the popular and forgiving 45-70.
This rifle will be a range toy. Im not sure if it will ever see competition, and I plan to only have access to 300yds max, regularly. Anything farther will be few and far between.
Anyway, Im pretty excited! Looking at an approx. 18 month wait.
