I really lucked out with my first M14 build. Had a gunsmith buddy help me out. He really knew what he was doing.
I found a Douglas NM medium-weight 1:10 barrel. It shipped with a short chamber. He and I lapped a TRW M14 bolt into a Norinco M14S and then he finish reamed the chamber. After break-in I was getting 1 MOA with Federal GMM and another reloader buddy helped me work up a 168gr SMK load and that did 0.75 MOA. I was super happy since it didn't even have a unitized gas cylinder, and it's in a USGI walnut stock. I was like, "Should we unitize the gas cylinder?" He said "Nope. Leave it alone." So I did.
Took it up to the mountains in CO and figured I'd experience a POI shift, but I didn't.
I got a standard weight Polytech M14S after that, and I still enjoy shooting it with iron sights. M14 rifles tend to get a bad rap here, but for semi-auto fire with iron sights they're really great.
