Picked my 336 Big Loop up from my local shop today(30-30).  I am very impressed with the fit and finish, i was worried with new marlin alot of guys on here bash them..  I have yet to shoot it, but the wood is tight and right up to the seams with no flaws that i can find, the action is smooth and has obviously actually been oiled from factory.  I plan on putting a simple 3-9 on it and using it as a brush gun, but ill be sure to post up target pictures when i get it sighted in.

Just a sample size of one but i figured i would pass it on.

Good choice great gun.  I have had 2 of them
over the years.  This might be my next rifle
purchase.  I still see 30-30 on the shelves  when
other ammo is gone.  Like 223 556 9mm .

Yep,..and realistically it is widely available in the community if things came down to it.

Nice Rifle, I like the big loop.  I have an old JM 336, partially because it seems all stores always have 30/30.

Looks awesome!

But why run the optic so far forward?

It's an long eye relief scope in scout c configuration.  You can shoot with both eyes open like a red dot.

Nice! Great looking grain in the wood. My vote is a nice 1-4 or 1-6, traditional mount. Modern optics of quality have a forgiving eye box and are quick to use, even with both eyes open.

If you reload, a mild practice load with 150 Berry's and reduced data with H4895 is a hoot!

I do reload....might have to get some 30-30 dies!

I was looking at the leupold 1-4 VX seems like it would be perfect for a 30-30, as I figure effective range is probably only 175-200 yards.

For some enjoyment, read up on Jeff Cooper's scout rifle concept and apply it to the levergun. In a nutshell, the forward optic allows carry at arms length around the balance point (handiness), better peripheral visibility/situational awareness in dynamic scenarios, and top loading on bolt actions and open top leverguns like the Winchesters.

I love the Apalachian (lever) Scout!

I have a cheap nc star 2x7 on as a proof of concept.  Thinking about the the Leupold Freedom 1-4 or Burris to replace it.

Do guys run 1 piece mounts or just a base with rings?

And i figured that for the 150$ it's hard to go wrong with a Leupold optic.

I'm at 22.5 H4895 and oal at 2.485. The blunt point on the Berry's will contact the rifling otherwise, check yours. Hodgdon reduced data with H4895 only

Talley makes a nice set or the one piece base/ring type, minimize joints when you can.

OP you might want to consider a small red dot for your rifle. I put a Burris Fastfire III on my 1894 .44 mag and shoot it better than I did with the scope. It's much faster and easier to carry too. Attachment Attached File

The blued steel looks great.  But for the life of me I can't figure out why folks have bought into the plywood stocks.  I guess like anything else if you hear a lie or in this case the manufacturers BS about these stocks often enough people will eventually believe it.

Probably cheaper then hardwood.  I think it looks good, not nearly as good as a old hardwood stock.

I was mostly referring to the overall condition of it, plus the seams have no splintering and it fits very tight with no play.

...all as It should, just have heard horror stories about new marlin so I figured I would pass it on.

Nice gun!  I've been very anti-Marlin for a while, but they really do seem to have turned a corner in terms of their rifles.  The last few newer ones I have seen looked finished well and fit nicely.  I'm hoping for them to do a 336 SBL in .35 Remington.  I would jump on that train in a heartbeat

So is this supposed to be a 6 round magazine?  It does not fit the 6th round of 30-30 it gets about 90% of the way...and that's all she wrote.

just a break in issue?

Looks good.... I just may get one as 30-30 is always readily available. The other lever gun ammo I see a lot of is .444 Marlin, one reason why I'm keeping ahold of the one I have.

I use a DNZ Game Reaper one piece mount on my Marlin GBL 45-70.  It holds the Redfield Revolution 2-7x33mm Riflescope 4-Plex Reticle 1/4 MOA very well even with full house loads.  I think the mount was under $50 and is made of aluminum.  I am very pleased with it.

I have an older 16" 336 30-30 that I recently took out and zeroed with 170 grain Federals.

It is topped with an older American made Burris 4X compact which seems about ideal for the little carbine.

At 150 yards, it  shoots a pretty decent group.

After I shot this group, I adjusted, and put them in the black, then shot at 100 yards. There was such a minuscule POA/POI difference between 100 yards and the 150 yard zero, it was not notable.

Just gotta wait till this OT hits on this check then a Leupold 1-4 and a mount is getting thrown on.
