I’m trying to get our posts M1 Garands ready for Memorial Day. We are having problems with most of them failing to cycle properly. I cleaned each rifle including disassembling the bolts and trigger groups. I measured the op rods and they are in spec. I lubed each rifle and performed a tilt test, sat. I had to replace 2 op rod springs. I didn‘t have any other parts issues. I have blank firing adapters with two different sizes (.172” and .156”).
I have a few that cycle, but most will not. I’ve tried both size BFA. I’ve cleaned out the gas port on the barrel. I’m not sure what else to try. any help would be appreciated. |

Are the gas cylinder screw poppets working properly? Try swapping the locking screw between working and non working rifles.

I found a WWII solid plug in my parts bin and tried that. It didn’t work.

Get in touch with the CMP and ask to talk to or text or email with one of their M1 Garand armorers.

Nothing to lose in trying the swap.
Are your blanks good? And not of the grenade launching type? I'm out of ideas. Good luck. |

I sent the CMP a message. At some time in the past, they changed their webpage and even though I can log in, it will not let me post anything

How old are the blanks you are using?

Do they cycle with live ammo?

When you say they will not cycle do you mean the action does not work at all as in the fired blank remains in the chamber?
Check gas cylinder to make sure it's not covering the gas port. Also try the gas cylinder from a good rifle to one of the ones that will not cycle. Start with the large orifice on the blank adapter then move to the smaller one if the first does not work. Lastly clean the crap outta the chamber as blanks are really rough on a firearm. |

I did the CMP contact form, not the forum.
The blacks I’m using are head stamped LC04, and were supplied by the army. The rifles that don’t operate will always fire the cartridge but not eject it. I don’t see the op rod move at all. |

They do wear out over time especially if not taken care of. Make sure not to cover the gas port when you do as that can happen sometimes. |

It is all too easy to have a gas cylinder cover the gas port in the barrel. Check for that and remedy it if found. That would cause the exact malfunction you mention.

These have to be tuned by drilling out the hole in the muzzle of the adapter. .172 is the smallest that may work. Open the hole with letter drills until it fires all three. BTW, I like to loctite the adapter as it will come off some rifles. This has happened number times because the barrel threads are worn.
Here is are the instructions which CMP will probably give you. http://www.90thidpg.us/Reference/Manuals/orangebook-M1_Tech_Bulletin_Latest.pdf |

BTW, 3 of the last 8 M1's I worked had broken op rod springs. These are readily available, do not get the extra power ones, they are too hard for old men to pull.

Did you measure the gas cylinders to see if they were in spec?

New pistons can be brazed on the op rods if worn narrower than spec. I’d send that job out to be done though. Or perhaps the VFW just gets parts from the army system.. |

Often one can keep winding on the gas cylinder lock and push the gas cylinder too far so it covers the barrel port. A bent paper clip and the gas plug removed and you can feel from the gas cylinder into the barrel port. If you cannot find the hole lined up then it certainly won’t cycle. |

I use an Atlantic Wall "Hollywood" BFA on mine (looks as un-modified as you can get without permanent mods) and a friend's homemade blanks. It comes with 3 orifice sizes and I had to use the smallest one (0.173”)
(The other included sizes are 0.187” and 0.200”) Still wouldn't cycle until I greased all the operating parts with LubriPlate really well. I wiped the piston lightly also. Than it ran great. |

Dang, been years since I heard "rikitik", made me chuckle. Thanks for the help with my 03 Jeremy, extractor ordered.

I've only had to have one op rod redone out of about 30 weapons. Following the directions above will fix your problem.

Was the problem ever found? What was the fix??
