I have been wanting to do a SBS for a long time. But want a classic look and with wood furniture. I picked up a used 1957   Light 12 at what I think is a good price. Finish on wood looks like crap but wood looks good underneath. Metal has a nice patina. It is also a vented rib gun. I have never owned a auto 5. What all do I need to change out to make it function? If you have links that would be great! I’ll post some pictures this evening.

Here is a pic of friction ring setup.  I have a Japanese A5 on layaway.

Some good info from Art on how it functions, how to set it, and how to lubricate it:

Browning A5 friction ring setup and why they fail to cycle

Some good info on 2 piece lifter conversion:
Order Information:
MidwayUSA:
Browning Carrier Assembly B...
Product #: 174884
Qty: 1
Browning Locking Block Latc...
Product #: 697224
Qty: 1
$150 ish

I love mine. You mention that the wood underneath is in good shape. That’s a real plus. The wood on many  of these older A5s have been exposed to a lot of oil through the years which causes the wood to breakdown. Especially where the butt stock meets the action.

Do you know if that applies to Remington Model 11s too?

Nice. I think I'll go with the full length mag tube when ever I do mine.

I just did one.

Change out your springs and do the friction ring right and it will run whatever.  Mine runs buck like a champ and birdshot when I change it around to low base loads.

Arts sells a kit that has everything you need. Midwest gun works bought all of brownings parts so that’s where you have to go for most factory stuff like 2 piece conversions.  Your gun I believe will have speed feed already.

This was like cost 8 or so just rubbed on with a piece of old shirt.

Finished product.
