On my M38 the rear sight is jumping under recoil to higher elevation settings.  I already took it apart and put stronger springs in there so it's hard to change the rear sight setting.  It seems to stay if I leave it on '2' but when I have it on '3' it can hop to '4' within a few shots.  Is there any way I can fix this?

That is a secret automatic feature to increase the range/sight setting to help you keep on target when the enemy is fleeing your devastating fire.

Replace the slider or sight? Teeth may be worn on one or both.

I just filed a couple of the trouble notches a little deeper and that fixed it.  Tested good at the range today.

Sounds like you got it but a quick temp repair a small square of 3M double sided 30 or 40 pound tape on the bottom of the site bar in front of the  adjuster clean with brake cleaner before you put it on and it will hold it there

@backbencher

I've never used one of those.  Is it a problem on those?

Once they're worn, yes.  Most of those I've been issued self-indexed just while being carried.
