Does anyone have any pictures with the effective range of the modlite IR head and PID?

Debating dual modlights and the tnvc laser for a 22 build for the freaking cat food thieves.

I’ve heard the 850 heads autogate the tube any truth to that TNVC?

Relatively new to NV world. Debating a Modlite IR setup to pair with a laser unit that lacks a illumination because my impression is that all the civ legal illuminators sub MAWL are quite weak. Given what little I've learned, that 850 head sounds impressive. Would this be a reasonable set up for ~250 and in?

Take a look at the perst thread specifaccly perst 3

I have a Modlite 850 head, a coworker has a PERST3.

The Perst 3 is better up close. It has more even light with diffuser and wont blind you and its wider of a beam. PERST is better at long range on the order of multiple times the range its not even close.

Modlite 850 has too much power and too much spill. It dims your NV via autogating substantially. Its not a great illuminator. Its great out to 100 yards but not much past unless you have nothing for the spill to reflect off of. The beam is like a suped up Surefire M600V or two... or five... or eleventeen...

Also, the PERST 3 crushes the MAWL C1. I mean the DBAL D2 already beats the MAWL barely but PERST crushes it for illuminator output... it is not a joke. But MAWL is way more ergonomic and has a more useful beam shape.

No joke...

Yes I understand the perst is freaking amazing. But my 22lr doesnt need illumination out to 800 yds.

For a .22 I'd just use an IR Surefire. If its for a magnified i2 weaponsight I'd use something with more of a tight beam like a ELIR with IR filter removed, that way it just fills the scope view. You wont need more than 70 yards with a .22 and IR laser. The bullet is dropping way too much for 100+ yards. The 850 Modlite is just blazing ridiculous IR all over. Totally different than something like the SPIR which has better evenness and can be focused, but SPIR is overkill for a .22 as well.

Just got one. Didn’t have any issues outdoors with autogating anything.   Shot against berms at 25 & 50 yards.
The light created quite the illumination and shadow of a steel target, I couldn’t even see, with out the illumination, @ 50 yards. Worked awesome.

Inside. It is different story. Definitely auto gating in a short house etc.

I’m using Gen 3. Sentinels. FYI.

The modlite head is approximately 1100mW according to their website. And that is the 850nM version. I have been able to illuminate 500 yard objects. But I have found the IR modlite head to be a bit too powerful. The beam is really wide and the sheer power it pumps out is why it can illuminate so far. But using with any kind of barrier in between you and your target, you will struggle to see your target. Try using inside a room looking out a window. Unless you stick the Modlite outside of the window, the entire room will light up and your nods will dim down not allowing you to see outside the window anymore.

Here is a little video clip I did comparing my MAWL-C1+ and the Modlite IR 850.

For your needs shooting a .22LR, the Surefire Vampire lights will do just fine.

I’ll go ahead and apologize in advance for the subpar pics.

It’s fairly dark here tonight. First pic is with zero IR illumination. Second is a Surefire M300V. Third is the Modlite IR-850. Tree line is roughly 60 yards away.

Thanks for the photos. I have a modlite and was considering the IR head, but after looking at these photos I see very few times where it would actually be beneficial

I don’t believe so - these were taken on my back porch and not in a confined space. It can definitely autogate in a small area like a room as pointed out earlier in the thread.

ModLite looks like a much tighter beam than the M300V.

@DevL

You’re the first person I’ve seen claim that the D2 outperforms the MAWL. Can you elaborate?

So I used it tonight and I'll say I'm impressed. Downside is the suppressor splash blooms out the tube and doesn't allow all the light to get downrange. 80yds and it makes my 952v look like a old school mag light.

I am going to get a trex light bar and see if I can push it out even with the end of the suppressor and eliminate the splash.

will these heads fit the smaller 300 series surefire (and other companies) bodies?

I currently have a Surefire KM2-C head on a Haley Strategic thorntail 600 body and I'm thinking of changing that head over to a brighter white light exclusive head and buying a 300 series setup with this Modlight IR head if it'll work and run dual lights.

No, as they require the much higher-amperage 18650 or 18350 battery units. Therefore they need a bigger diameter battery housing like those that come on the Surefire Dual Fuel units. If you don’t already have one of those it’ll probably be most cost effective to buy a whole Modlite setup with their own shorty housing. The old housings won’t work with the ML heads.
