I just acquired my first 45-70 and went for the SBL with the rail on it.

I was wondering what is the best route to take for optics.  This will be a woods gun.

Is it better to go the 'scout' scope route to get the optic further down the gun or go with something that has more of a standard eye relief?

What are you going to do with it?  A red dot may work....

On my 1894 CSBL (.357), I use a Primary Arms Cyclops ACSS Prismatic optic with green illumination, on a LaRue mount.  It pushes the optic to almost twice the intended eyebox, but it's still quite open and visible; just know that it's beyond its manufacturer's intended use.  But I find it works well, and barely clears the aperture rear, I can't even adjust the focus knob because the crenelations hit the aperture.

You CAN go the Scout route, in which case I enjoy Leupold.  I have an uncatalogued 1-4 VX2 on my Scout, and it works quite well for where I use it:

Hunt whitetail in the woods.

I'm a big red dot fan when it comes to AR's, but I do like to get a very good look at a buck before I shoot (which is why I inquired about a magnified optic).

I am obsessed with this combo. You will need to ditch the rail though.

I thought real hard about that on my 1894, but decided against it because I already had a prismatic laying around and wouldn't have been able to attach a WML without the extended rail.

I've got a Leupold 58810 on mine. 2.5x fixed scout scope. Good glass for the $.

I did the same not too long ago for another rifle of mine; it was discontinued then, too

The 1-4 one on my GSR is a 119621, I think.  I agree that it's great glass for the money; Leupold forward mounted scopes don't get the recognition they're due, IMO.

Vx-r is all discontinued.  There is currently a vx-freedom 1.5-4 scout.

I haven't looked in a while but I think different generations of the Leupold Scouts have notably different eye relief; some are full on scout eye relief and others seem to be more of IER, IER+ type scopes.

This is very, very true.  The "scout" eye relief is different from the extended eye relief is different from the infinite eye relief.

Maybe the VX/R Patrol? Not sure if it would work the same, though.
