I posted a build thread in the SBR area but figured I'd show this off here. Started with a 2006 1895GS which was chopped and threaded for a can.  I did all the machine work myself as well as cutting the forearm down to fit.  The gun holds 4+1 rounds and handles like a dream.

Before:

After:

And for that one guy that just can't get it:

Looks fantastic !  How short is it now after the chop?

@Balkish the barrel is 12.5" with an overall length of 31".  The 44 SBR in my avatar is quite a bit smaller.

I saw the complete show in the other thread. All I can say is amazing! Your skills are beyond stellar.

Good looking rifle!

I'm a fan of your work. I just got a Marlin 1894SBL and the only thiing that could make it better is to be an SBR

@KingStrider

Thanks for the clarification - I tracked down the other thread.  Your work and photography is great.

I really want that gun.

Edit.  I did replace my stock on my 357 Marlin.  You replied on Marlin Forum.

Very nice looking, I really like the slim forend.  I think I'd have wanted the recoil pad on there though- looks a bit painful.

I like it. You say your 44 is quite a bit shorter but that picture looks like they're close. What's the size difference? Wish all these guns just came this way. Have you been able to chrono stuff out of the short barrel?

I was finally able to take the gun to the range for testing using several handloads and a couple boxes of factory ammo. For fun I mounted a Burris Fastfire 3 with an American Defense quick mount and the whole rig including suppressor fits into a small Allen padded bag. As expected, the shorter barrel does give up some velocity but I don't think a deer will ever know the difference. All loads were stable at 50 yards and the subs are very quiet when shooting with the suppressor. The factory ammo had a lot of muzzle flash but the Hornady stuff was a real handful with the short barrel. Talk about shoulder mounted artillery! I have a lot of the Remington 405 JSPs so will probably work up a slightly faster load for the majority of my plinking and hunting duties. Hoping to use this for deer in the fall..

That's pretty cool and reinforces my theory that 16" barrels would pretty much never exist if our laws didn't mandate them. 12"-14" is so much better on almost every walk around gun including AR's Shotguns and rifles.

Interesting- I'm honestly surprised how little velocity it gives up.

Funny thing (or probably just sad) is that I have a stainless GG that I've never shot- had the thing for probably six years now (disclaimer, I was out of the country for a good part of that).    It was chopped to 16" and threaded for a flash suppressor when I got it.

6 lbs, 2.6 oz @ 31” OAL.

With the can installed it weighs 6 lbs, 14.3 oz so is lighter than the original 18.5" configuration.

After all that work, the thing I like best is that the magazine cap is held on by a screw whose slot is perfectly aligned with the longitudinal axis of the tubular magazine and, oh by the way, the slot is not buggered up.

That is good work.

I really wish that I could SBR and suppress my 1894.  Sadly, neither is allowed in NY.

@kingstrider -

Years ago I saw a Grizzly Custom SBR and wanted one.  Never got around to it.

I discovered this thread last month.  Bought an 1895 GS on Friday afternoon and efiled the F1 on Saturday morning.  Thank you for your excellent photos and descriptions.  This was the kick in the butt I needed to get moving.

@prebans I asked Grizzly about building a SBR a couple years ago and the owner turned me down saying they were not taking on new work and sticking to their own models instead.  Whatever, I did it myself and saved a lot of money.  Sounds like a cool project.

Their prices seemed "crazy," but "crazy" pricing in relation to "custom builds" is rarely crazy.  Same with long wait times for custom builds; they're the only things that make ATF waits seem short.

It will be a cool project!  The post office misdirected my fingerprint cards (efiled), so more time to the ATF wait.  I love how government at all levels creates problems, but that's another post for another time.  Right now I'm deciding on what other modifications I want to make to the rifle.  This one actually be a working rifle; a friend owns a property with thick woods and brush north of here with bears.  Black bears usually aren't a problem, but involve cubs and a black might as well be a grizzly.  I also travel west (NM, AZ, UT, CO, WY, MT, ID, and the Dakotas) annually at minimum.  While I don't hunt, this rifle will be easy to tote around in the event I run into anything troublesome.  While my Alaskan .454 was a good friend when I encountered a moose a couple of years ago, I would have preferred a rifle.  (Didn't have to shoot.  The moose saw me, snorted, and wandered off.  That was a win.)

The stainless metal, laminated furniture, threaded barrels and Picatinny rails offend my eyes, yet for some reason I absolutely must have 3 or 4 of them for myself.

Very nice! A 540 grain bulllet even at subsonic velocities would hit like Thor’s Hammer and be so very quiet.

I sent my last 1895 to Morgan at class3 machining for threading....  assuming you have a form 1 and the engraving is done I can't imagine he'd have an issue doing your shortening/threading.  I don't think he'd want to muck with shortening the forearm though if you want to go that short.
He always takes a long time to do lever actions though, my last one was like 13 days until I got it back via mail.

I load 510gr subsonic 45-70, 44mag and 45colt are quieter thanks to the smaller case volume.  I actually prefer my 44mag rifle as it's lighter and more fun than my 1895.

That looks like a SilencerCo Hybrid on the 1895, although SilencerCo lists it at 17.3oz. How does it shoot/what accuracy are your getting with the can on?
