I mailed a handgun for a gentlemen to an 01 FFL in Michigan to save him the $$ of having to ship it overnight. Is it necessary for me to log it into my A&D books?

If you took possession of it and using your privilege of being an FFL to use the US Mail - I would log it.

It would have been a good question for the OP to ask BEFORE it was acquired and subsequently shipped.
