I have an M1A scout that I'm trying to remove the gas cylinder on, but it won't budge.
Every video I've found online shows the gas cylinder coming off easily or with only a slight tap from a mallet. Mine won't budge ever after hitting it with a mallet. I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas on how I could get it loose? Any history of SA using thread locker or something else to hold them in place? |

I have the Sadlak gas lock wrench and the gas lock came off easily. Just the Gas Cylinder won't budge.

If it’s the cylinder not the piston I have never removed that I just clean it.

Once you have it out, scrape off the carbon and fouling and re-install DRY -- no liquid lubrication at all.

I think it's just very carbon locked. I used the mallet on it some more with no luck.
Same thing for hitting it with the heat gun and CLP. Photo of the stuck Gas Cylinder. It looks like it may have budged a little, but it's still not coming off.  I'm at the point where I think I will take it to the gunsmith to see if he can get it off. |

A dribble of turbine mouse milk will free the cylinder. Check in the shop at a local general aviation airport.
Kroil and GM Engine Top Cleaner are also likely solvents. Stop banging on the cylinder. |
