What is the opinion on running Winchester M118 in terms of performance? I’m just beginning to learn my rifle so have only used M80 ball ammo so far.

Is it worthwhile testing M118?

If you don't reload, then it will be your best bet.

Special ball? I’d rather shoot 130gr.

It’s even less effective than an open tip match bullet.

M118LR is the chosen round for the Mk17 SCAR in combat zones.  Old stock M118 had a 173gr Match FMJ, replacement M118LR has a 175 gr OTM bullet.  Mk319 a 130 gr Barrier OTM is also used if available.  M80/M80A1 is just used on ranges or machine guns.

Mine printed spectacular 4” groups with oblong grease rings when shooting 118LR...and that was after FN recrowned it. Hurray 1:12 twist. You can try. One barrel to the next may give different results, and some have reported good accuracy with it.

People don’t like 12 twists with 175s but my AI performed. FN SPR too. But it’s not what I would choose.

I have 130 TTSXs for short 308s.

M118LR is my go to match round in a SCAR...for most shooting I just run ball ammo...

True, but for an (assumed) civilian shooting it on a (assumed) range and who has to (assumed) pay for it...I still say why?

To hit stuff far away? The 175gr SMK is a lot better at extended ranges than 147gr ball.

OP didn’t say what kind of shooting though so it’s hard to say if it’s worth it or not.

M118 (or Federal 175 GMM) is my go-to round for the SCAR when accuracy matters. My gun shoots it lights-out despite the 1:12 twist barrel. This is a target I shot with Israeli m118 a couple weeks ago:

This was like 13 rounds at 100 yards with a vortex Razor 1-6.

M118 isn’t an SMK.

I assumed the OP was talking about M118LR, I didn’t think the M118 173gr “special ball” stuff had been made for decades.

It hasn’t but it’s out there. I just consigned 5500 rounds of 7.62, much of which was M118.

Thank you - this very helpful to understand. I am specifically looking at M118LR Winchester ammo that’s in stock now. I’d like to see how that groups compared to Federal GMM 175 and 168gr rounds. Also on the lookout for Black Hills SMK 168 to test when available.

Plan to use my modest amount of M80 for training ammo.

Was not aware of Mk319 so will research that too, thanks!

Seems like I ran some M118LR through my 17 and wasn't real impressed with the results. I wanna say 168's did alot better.

I left off the LR at the end if we’re being technical. The stuff used on the target in my post was the Israeli stuff sold by SG ammo, I know it’s an M118LR clone and it’s a 175 grain bullet which I am quite confident is a SMK. It’s not listed on their site at the moment so I can’t go look at the exact specs.

The M118LR is an SMK, yes. M118 is a 173gr FMJ from the prewar 30-06. It’s BC was so high that the Army’s ranges couldn’t retain the projectiles in all cases so it was dropped from service. IMHO that was a mistake, but that was 90 years ago.

I did not have much luck with it my SCAR like FGMM 168gr and does really well with some old Aussie surplus ammo.  I also put up better groups with PPU 168gr match and BH 168gr match.  Anything over 168gr my SCAR will shoot 2MOA on average with the occasional 1.5MOA or as bad at 3-4MOA.  FGMM 168 has been the best of the best even versus some reloads I copied the FGMM cartridge and playing around with the powder charge FGMM still consistently shoots better.

I bought a bunch of this 3 years ago. In my SCAR 17S with an old Leupold MKIV 3.5-10 mildot it shoots 1-1.5 MOA at 300M and 1.5-2.75MOA at 500m. It shoots sub MOA out of my M24. Some lots have been more accurate than others.
