I have obtained a M&P 10 and am wondering what would be the best way to mount a OTAL on it? It looks like there is not enough room on the upper receiver for my backup sights, scope and the OTAL so is it time for a free floating rail? Or a higher scope or what?

You are a little limited on options unfortunately. Since the otal is going to be your aiming point, you are going to need something that maintains zero as well. I don't think the magpul handguards would work either for this purpose.
