Right now I have a pretty nice built out AR15 (12.5” SBR, suppressor, Aimpoint Pro, good without being Gucci) and wanting a nice .223/5.56 rifle to pair with it. Right now I’m considering the VHS-2 and AUG since they’re both able to be suppressed fairly easily (Aug just needs a different gas block), but not particularly interested in the x95 for bullpups. Some of the nicer rifles I’m looking at are over budget ($2kish if I can sell my CZ pistol) like the APC 223, Scar 16, FS2000, and maaaaaybe Spear but still not sold on it even if I could afford it.

What else might I consider around this price point? I’ve thought about the mini14 and RDB but not really sold on them. If my best options are the Hellion and AUG, what do you recommend?

ARX100, but it's future is questionable.
Maybe a 5.56 Galil ACE?

Is it worth it at the same price as a VHS2 or Aug?

I vote for the AUG.

The AUG has lots of spare parts available, including barrels and bolt groups. Magpul AUG mags are excellent and inexpensive.

It’s a well vetted design with good factory support.

Yeah it is nice the availability of current parts. I think the VHS2 will get there one day, and surpass it, but it’ll take time for sure.

Pickings are slim in 5.56, but everyone needs an AK.

Back in the day, the answer was an H & K 93 or an AR-180.

Best of luck with whatever you pursue.

MHO, YMMV, etc.  Be well.

What do you like about the Bren 2? I don’t know much about it other than it seems expensive for what it is haha

Do they tend to have any issues? Do they take some special 556 AK mags or stanag?

There’re AK in 556 that takes Stanag mags.

Years ago when I was in a similar situation got a surplus Galil and later an AUG with NATO stock.. those two satisfied my curiosity about the AK & bullpups world.

CZ Bren HK G36 Sig 550 XCR are other cool and more expensive options

I think the three best options are either PSA, Zastava, or Arsenal. I have a Sam-5 that runs good. And AC Unity 556 AK magazine work in it, so expensive mags aren't an issue. It's also typically around $18-1900.

PSA is the cheapest option, but they also have an AK that takes AR mags if you dont want to stock up on new mags.

I have a short barreled M85 in 5.56 that I SBR'd. It needs an adjustable gas block to make it better. Ballistically, it's not much different than your current short barreled AR so maybe not best choice.

Also have an older Tavor but they are not known to suppress all that well. Pretty gassy.

Not a ton of choices out there. Curious what you settle on

I have an AUG and a VHS2. The VHS2 is already ahead of the AUG. Like the AUG, the VHS has a shitty safety, but it lacks the unlubricated staple gun trigger. In all aspects, the VHS is a better modern rifle.

Perun x16. It uses a lot of AR-15 parts, barrels, modified lower receiver, triggers etc. If I had money laying around I would buy a builder's kit and throw on a FN CHF barrel. Pretty neat design IMHO.

I'd personally just build/buy a 16" AR to go with it but if you have to have something different, I'd look at a SCAR or Robinson XCR. Both have a good track record for reliability and have a similar manual of arms to the ARs we're used to.

Is the BRN-180 too AR-15 to be non-AR15 for you?

I have a Scar-16 and I believe I like shooting the BRN-180 more just due to it's size and weight.  The BRN is a very slim rifle.

I have a vhs2 and a bren 805. The bren 2 is next on my list, both are my favorite serious rifles right now. I love how easy and nice it is to shoot the vhs supressed. I went through all the steps to make an 10.5 ar good enough for supressor use and not get gassed out, or too long, then I got the vhs2 and out of the box is insanely better both for gas and both are the same length with the can. I'll take the 16" of the vhs over the 10.5 any day. The only thing I haven't tried is NV with the VHS yet. The 10.5 and bren are set up for NV currently

Expensive for what it is? But yet you want a 45 year old bullpup with less features and higher price. Ok

The VHS is a very nice rifle. I’d definitely take it over the current US made AUG or the Mini 14.

Bren 2 - modern gen  assault rifle that is best of breed or damn close to it.

AUG - iconic and suppresses easily but not well...its loud even suppressed.

SCAR16  - but overpriced for what it is.

B&T APC223 - swiss quality.

ARX100 - too bad it appears that Beretta has all but abandoned the platform in the US

LOTS of great 556 rifles/carbines out there right now.

I would say this too, love shooting mine but don’t have enough rounds through it to recommend it to others and the aftermarket parts are non existent so you’d have to be happy with stock rifle and an optic of choice.

I'm down to a Bren 2 or XCR but man I want the instant gratification and don't want to wait 6 months.  Maybe pick up the Bren 2 and then order the XCR the following month.

I'd choose the bren because it's like half the cost. Even if they were the same price, the bren might still beat out the scar.

I have 4 Bren2, (1 SBR), one in 7.62x39 , 1 original SBR Bren 805 10.5 inch SBR and Belgian SCAR 16.

Like them all a lot but I don’t think SCAR being that much superior, if at all to Bren 2.   Bren is fine rifle but I think CZ really needs to offer spare parts.  Now, SCAR parts are not that much easier to find either.

Bren in 7.62x39 has had some issues.  Mine has DeadAir mount permanently attached to 16.1 inch so it is a rifle.
It is bit over gassed but I end up buying 5.56 gas valve, which significantly reduced  bolt speed.  I never had any feeding issues that I can recall even with original setup.
