After sighting my 45-70 in I realized I need a longer eye relief scope.
Something in the 1.5-6X variable range. Not a pistol scope, but something around 4" or longer. At least a 32mm objective.

Most of my Marlins wear Leupold 1.5-5x20mm scopes.

Vortex make a 2x7 scout scope it's very reasonably priced so you can see if a scout setup works for you and then you could upgrade the scout or not I really like the one on my MVP

Not sure what your budget is.

I went with the Leupold VX-R 1.5-5x33mm Scout.  The objective sits right over the back of the receiver with full access to the hammer (with enough eye relief to push out a bit more).  I didn't want a traditional scope for my 1895G, I don't like the way they look with the scope sitting all the way out.  Dang scope cost more than the gun...  LOL!

Mine is no where near as nice as this Grizzly, but you'll get the general idea, my scope sits a bit further back with the objective sitting about where the rear ghost sight is:

Grizzly Custom

I hope this helps!

Thanks,
D

I am thinking of putting a Nikon Black Force 1000 on my new Marlin Scout.

I know the Speedforce reticle was designed for ARs and 3 gun but I think it could actually work out well for 45-70.   Nikon's Spot On has ballistic info for this scope in several 45-70 offerings.

Thoughts????

Leupold makes this model: VX-3i 1.75-6x32mm.  Eye relief is 4.4".

Funny you should mention Leupold - I ended up going with their VX - R Hog scope.

Rather than a long eye relief scope, consider and intermediate eye relief scope. It'll still prevent scope eye, but won't be as susceptible to glare as a LER scope. E.g., the Leupold IER VX-2 1.5-4x. Here's one mounted on my Ruger GSR:
