Need to feed an old model (1963 vintage) Ruger 44 carbine.

Anyone else feeding one of these?

yep.no lead bullets,it will gum up the gas piston.

Factory velocity 240gr jacketed hollow points or semi jacketed soft points do work well, the gun was designed around that load.

I've got some screaming 180gr loads and the gun is not as reliable with them as with the 240's.

The little carbine is a hell of a deer killer for out to about 150yrds.

Disclaimer: I'm loading for a Deerfield, not original 44.

23.5 grains of IMR4227 under a Hornady 240 XTP works very well. Accurate, and burned 4227 smells good (important). Should give 1600fps or so.

Yup 240gr full house loads, 63 made should be a deerstalker model. Keep a good eye on the trigger group they liked to crack. If it cracks your basically screwed.

I shoot mine maybe once every year or so 20rd just to play with it.

Very fun rifle.
Used to load with max published charge of IMR 4227 (a compressed load), mag primers, behind 240gr hollow points.
Was accurate out to 200 yards, just beware that bullet drop gets severe out there

Yep, same here.  Used Hercules 2400 which now Alliant 2400.  Same powder, no difference.

The 180’s really put the deer down.

Lil Gun works great in rifles and produces plenty of velocity at lower pressures. Hodgdon online data is available.

Yes, I have a '63 Ruger .44 Carbine also.
Ruger discontinued use of the "Deerstalker" name in '62 after a lawsuit, same rifle, they just removed the name.

The carbine was designed for full power 240gr loads and that is what it likes.
23-23.5gr of H110 works well in mine.

I have read that the 300gr bullets may not stabilize (1:38 twist), but they do in mine.

As mentioned, the trigger housing is the weak spot, the front tab has a tendency to break off.
If this happens, and you cannot find a replacement housing, there is a workaround fix, so it's not the end of the world.

When we were prototyping/testing AR's in 44 Magnum and 440 Corbon (1998), the 1:38 twist would stabilize some 300gr bullets but not all.
We tried 1:18, but accuracy was rather mediocre.  We found that 1:25 twist shot everything great from the rifle length AR barrels and all rifles/uppers produced by Tromix in 44 Rem Mag and 440 Corbon had 1:25 twist barrels on them.

Which mirrors what I read which was that 300gr MAY not stabilize in the Ruger .44 Carbine.

My carbine shoots them and they don't keyhole at 100yds, but I agree the accuracy I have gotten is not as good as with the 240's.
But then again, I don't find Winchester Q4240 to be particularly accurate in my carbine at 100 yds.
