I just purchased an M1A from the EE and looking for options on mounting a light. I have googl'd and seen one that was made by midwest industries that looked neat, but apparently has since been discontinued? I also tried scrolling through the threads here and dont see any other information on the topic.

Thanks

Which model m1a and what stock is it in?

Depending on where you really would prefer the light a small section of universal pic rail screwed into the stock and using a thorntail mount is likely easiest and gives you the most flexibility. Otherwise, an ultimak or m14.ca scout handguard and thorntail will allow you to push the light out and give you a place to put a tapeswitch if you'd like.

If you decide to add a piece of universal rail, just make sure it doesn't hit anything with the hardware inside the stock and run with it.

It’s an socom 16 with original stock I believe. Call me a douche, but I’m not keen on drilled holes in the stock. Would mounting a light on the scout rail make me a tool?

That’s a solid setup, but the price is steep considering how much I already have in the rifle. That’s a lot of accessory real estate too, I’m not trying to pimp the gun out just add a light.

no, it will just sit back much farther than would be ideal is all. You could always add it to the top heat shield as well, they're relatively sacrificial. Same concept applies just make sure nothing hits the barrel. I don't blame you on not wanting to drill into the wood. They do come in nice walnut pieces for sure.

Here's what it would look like with a thorntail mount on the scout rail. Not a terrible spot just gonna have a decent shadow to it but its better than nothing.

Love that KAC rail. Closest thing aesthetic to that is a vltor. I don't care how fickle an M14 pattern is, they are some of the best looking setups out there.

Versa-pod & Sadlak both make mounts that replace the front sling swivel & add a piece of rail in front of it.  No extra holes in the wood & they look good.  I have the Versa-pod on my Scout.

This looks like a viable option, except that my stock is synthetic. The note states not for use with synthetic stocks.

Anyone know about these?

So the in a nut shell the wood and synthetic stocks are just inletted differently for the sling swivel area. The wood has 2 countersunk rivets and the synthetic has two captured nutserts. The wood rail replacement will have a backer plate with threads in it the requires the user to fit them to the stocks normally and the synthetic compatible will normally have just hardware to screw into existing nutserts. The profiles of the actual rails will likely be similar but may have some variances. The hardware between both stocks is just different for direct attaching without needing to do any work other than screw it on.

I'd be curious to see if eBay or gunbroker has one of those Midwest rails kicking around.

Hello and thanks for the in depth reply. I did a little research and I found the versa Mount for synthetic m1a stocks. Thanks for informing me there was a variant for synthetic. I ordered it up and I’m glad you found it for me. Thank you.

@turbomunkey

Where did you find the mount for a synthetic stock?

You rock. What light are you putting on it? I'm looking at TLR-1.

I was imagining something with a pressure pad, but I’m not 100% sure yet. I need to have the gun in hand and get an idea of what I’m looking at. I’ll probably search the EE and see if there’s any deals to be had.

Right on. I hate pressure pads, but your mileage may vary.

I’ve never used one. It just seems like it would make sense in this particular instance. I got a TLR-1 HL on the way via EE. Hopefully I can grab the gun this weekend.
