I have a nice leather rig coming in for my 1871 colt. I'm looking for a 4 or 5 inch fixed blade to go with it. Nothing fancy, just a simple hunter or skinner in a simple period correct sheath. Any suggestions?

Russel Green River knife.
Read a bit of the history of them and you will realize it will be a perfect and period correct choice.

I was going to put in my OP that I was strongly considering the green river hunter but im having a hard time finding a decent sheath. And yes I have tried working leather in the past and I suck at it so rolling my own is not the best option.

Wouldn't be against it, especially a smaller one with slab handles and small guard but when I look online all I find is $20 junk or $600 customs. Truth be told this knife will do very little work, it's just me wanting to put together a nice looking rig for myself.

If the blade was a touch longer. Back before my life got busy I used to make a few knives here and there, about 20 years ago I made a nice looking drop point with stag handles and a 5 inch blade, I just cant seem to find the thing after I moved.

Make a fold over sheath. No fancy seam or stitchery required, a few rivets will do. Look at the Crazy Crow website, they have kits.
Give it a try and surprise yourself.

Something inexpensive, can't go wrong with a classic Buck knife. Something expensive, Randall makes a nice Bowie

I was trying to buy a nice randall at a gun show over the weekend but I'm looking for something a little more historically correct

All under $200.00 and all but the last one include a sheath.
Any of them would look great on a cowboy rig.

I like these old Solgens.  If you shop around at antique stores and pawn shops.  They can be had for less than $40.00.
Because the pommel is screwed on with a nut. They can be easily be taken apart and rebuilt.
So whenever I find one for $10.00 or less no matter what the condition is, I buy it

Buck Frontiersman, handle material is not period correct but very nice looking.

To be honest the finish on mine was so nice I keep mine in the box to keep it from getting scratched up.

I recently found Esty, lots of guys on there that roll their own steel.

This is one of them.

It looked home-brewed, not that there's anything wrong with that. Thanks, mate!
