Says "made in China"

You are probably correct.
This Katana is suppose to be a Paul Chen....Trying to verify it.

From another site referencing a Paul Chen katana:

Attachment Attached File

Left image should be authentic Paul Chen for reference. Your pic looks like a knock off

Newly made, file marks look like a Chen Pao (Paul Chen),  let's see the rest of it.

I'll trust others to translate the mei. To me they still look like splattered bugs.

I emailed and got a reply from '' https://www.paulchenhanweiswords.com ''
They seemed a little surprised that I asked but anyway he said he is unable to tell from the pics.

In every way it appears to be the Paul Chen that it says it is.  So what's the question again?

The tsuba is this one:

https://roninkatana.com/rk-tsuba-set-z-18/

However, the other fittings are not matched to this tsuba.  Nor do they have to be.

If you want to positively identify the specific model, provide close-up photos of the menuki (decoration in the handle under the silk handle wrapping (ito) ) and of both metal caps (fuchi and kashira) at the ends of the handle.  Those should be specific to a given Chen model.

Nope.  The Shinto has the fullers (grooves) on the top of the blade. Properly called bo-hi.   The OP's sword does not have that feature.

I didn't notice that.
I was paying more attention to the guard.
The metal end caps match the guard and are like the one in the link I posted. Except the gold is worn off,if there was any.
Very difficult to see under the wrapping.
Thanks for the replies.

I don't mean to go off-topic but can someone tell me why there is a hole in the blade?   Thank you.

Wooden pins go through to hold the grip on.

Its the old model Shinto before they added the bohi. Probably early 2000s

I believe you are correct.
I recently found an ad/web page for it without the bohi.
Thanks for all the responses.
Doing research now on replacing the ito and same.
