Years ago I was given a Steyr M95 rifle, not carbine.  It is complete and in not bad condition except the barrel has a slot milled into it rendering it unshootable.  Many thousands of these were so converted post WWI and used for military training in schools all over the place.

I've hunted for years for a usable rifle barrel with zero luck.  I priced getting a properly profiled barrel made in 7.62 x 54R since I have lots of that ammo, but the price was in the $300+ range.

Year after year I've looked at all the regular places for a rifle, not carbine, barrel.

My only hope is to find one in overall poor shape but with a good barrel.

I am losing hope.

Is the cut crosswise or lengthwise?

Any chance of drilling it and inserting a sleeve?

It’s an oval about an inch long and 1/4+ across.

Barrel is unsalvageable.

No guarantee on bore quality.  I don't trust them.

I'd drop a bunch of notifications into Numrich and wait for a year. After that, is part it out and fund a new one.

Call Bob Hoyt. Ask about repair/ lining. If anyone can do it, he can.

He sent me a carbine barrel and not a rifle barrel. Really disappointed.

That's unfortunate.

Can the seller make it right or does he not have a rifle length barrel after all?

He didn’t have a rifle barrel. I returned it for a full refund.

Does your M95 have a functional bolt head and striker? The deactivated Steyr M95 long rifle I owned in my youth had the bolt head's striker hole filled in with metal, and its striker was "clipped" as well.

My M95 rifle also had the large slot milled through its chamber, as you described. You could buy a functional M95 from the same company for a few bucks more, but I couldn't afford the extra money when I was 12 years old.

Not your fault. Let’s see if the full refund comes back.

I have a complete and matching M95 rifle. Don’t need another, but these parts have unrealized potential.

I really want a .311 barrel chambered in 7.62x54R for this project, but it would be ridiculously expensive.

It would be fun to have a new straight pull rifle in 7.62R. Might even be accurate with light ball.
