I’m going to start to get into blacksmith if in a few weeks and have thought about making a knife or others stuff from used M1 barrels that Numerichs has for around $20.

Does anyone know what type of steel or alloy there made of or if they are chrome lined?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Garand military barrels were probably made from chromoly steel (8620) and definatly not chrome lined.

Used to be an old home made crowbar at home.  Made from an old Winchester rifle octagonal barrel.  No idea where it came from, who made it or why it ended up as a crowbar.  That was back in the 1970's it was in the shed behind grandma's house.  Us kids thought it was cool to use when pulling nails.

A drawing number and or DAS/Ord Wheel stamp on the ricasso would be a nice touch.

Barrel steel is tough but I would think it to soft for a knife.  A rail road spike is good knife material.

Garand receivers and bolts are made from 8620 steel, but the barrels are listed as 4150 alloy in Hatcher's Notebook.

Is 8620 suitable for knives?

Rail road spikes are garbage for knives.

Try the barrel.

FWIW, 4140 and 4150 is good steel and can be heat treated to some degree. I don't know whether or not it would make good knife blades, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be worth a shot and any knowledge gained in both forging and heat treatment would be a grand thing.

4140 is fairly soft , but it may work out ? It should be easy to put an edge on and keep sharp .

I made a bench block from 4140, and heat treated it. It tested on a pretty nice hardness tester at 45 Rockwell C. I don’t think that would be quite hard enough for a knife blade. Maybe some other heat treat recipe could make it harder, don’t know.

I would buy one in a second, it's an awesome idea to reuse material
