I bought this old 1897 Winchester hunting shotgun awhile back and didn’t give much for it. This particular gun was made in 1910 according to the serial number.
Mechanically it was great, the wood looked very good, but the metal didn’t look good and was well worn and pitted in some places.
I had it reblued in as deep a blue or you can say black finish.
I then had the barrel shortened down to 18.5 inches.
I was going to go 20 inches. But liked the looks of 18.5 better.
I’ll never go with a heat shield or bayo lug adapter so no worries there on the length.

So I didn’t destroy history, because I can find Winchester 1897 hunting length shotguns on a regular basis.
But the riot style ha e seemed to all dried up.
So here’s my clone.

Did I sell you that one?

Damn.  I think the one I sold wasn't a take down, but did sell it on to an arfcommer.

I chopped one of mine too.  I had 3 97s prior to the batrabies shotgunpanic.

I went with 20 1/8" in case I decide to trench it.

You sold yours to me! Shot it so much i bent the barrel threads and got a OEM trench barrel from 1941 and got it installed.

So now its a hybrid 1899 frame w/1941 trench barrel at 20.5"

OK.  I got a 97 that could use some of that barrel shortening....

Pipe cutter is your friend.

I took a dowel for my first one and measured 20.5" and then took a pipe cutter and chopped it off.

Makes the thing the perfect size and still able to bust clays with friends throwing by hand just fine.

I scored a Norinco "riot gun" last year for 230 bucks, got new furniture from Boyd's and shield/bayonet lug from Sarco, hardest part was the channels for the shield screws.
I wouldn't recommend putting the shield on yours, putting grooves in the barrel would compromise the value.

I can't wrap my heads around barrel threds.  I can't imagine shooting one to damage level.  After the one I chopped, I blasted enough slugs down range to make me flinch while making this post. Photo will be gone as soon as the intarwebz cashe catches up.  Going dark on that stufff, suprised I can still see my pic.

Those trench parts were unobtainium mid bat rabies panic, probably still are.  Would appreciate updates if they are back available.  One supplier is deaded.

I don't believe trench gun parts on your gun would lessen the value in this crazy market.

Just chopping mine satisfied my needz.

I have the Norinco version with the 20” barrel, that I used when I was doing Cowboy Action shooting. It’s actually not a bad shooter. Mine was modified by the previous owner to hold 6 rounds in the mag tube…

Nice cut down and looks nice with a gloss blue.

I agree with the heat shield and 18 barrel- while I have them on some trench guns - The additional weight is a real detractor for balance and handling quick.

Best option is to have both Trench and riot configs - then you don't have to worry about choosing one over the other.

looks great , I am always late in stuff I wanted to get years ago , they are going for crazy stupid prices now , love a takedown model with a trench and a riot  to swap out

just finished 99% of my C7A2 and want some old school bang
