I assume that the internal design of a factory suppressor is what retains the spring and piston of a 3 lug mount but how do you do it with a homemade suppressor?

The same way a commercial design does it.

Are you making and/or designing it yourself, or just curios?

If I just screw a Rugged 3 lug mount into a tube there is nothing retaining the spring and piston.

Your booster housing holds it all together providing its same thread pitch.

I guess this is where I am getting confused.

Is this a separate part you can buy? I don't see it on Rugged's website.

Who ever your suppressor maker is should have one.  But, it’s the internal thread pitch of it that matters. The trilug mount needs to thread into it. I’m not sure if rugged trilug mount TP is proprietary or not?

Rugged uses 1.125-28 TPI.

Is something like this what you're referring to?

You want this.
Use it with an “Omega threaded” tube.

OP, do you see why I asked if you were making one or just curious?

So the Rugged 3 lug mount screws into this cage which then threads into the tube?

Some designs, like Rugged and Griffin, use the booster piston housing included with the suppressor.  Other designs like Dead Air and Silencerco, use self contained 3-lug adapter where the entire adapter is a pre-assembled unit and is simply screwed into the rear of the suppressor.  The housing is part of the unit and the spring and internal collar are retained In the housing either by a nut or a snap ring.

Older cans, like the SWR Trident9, use a complete captured booster and 3-lug assy.

The Obsidian booster piston housing is built into the rear of the can.  That’s why it isn’t a separate part that you can buy, and that’s why all you need is the caring, collar, and three lug adapter.

Liberty, Gemtech and SDTA 3 lugs are all self contained, threaded 1-3/16 24 TPI.  Those 3 makers also have stand alone booster housings so threaded.

Yes.

Not on an Obsidian.  The “cage” is built into the tube, not a threaded part that can be removed from the tube.

It works that way with my MG7.

Doesn’t matter how it works on a MG7.  I was clearly talking about an Obsidian, and I have an Obsidian 45, so I know for sure how it works.

OP wasn’t talking about an Obsidian. This is the build it yourself (silencer) forum.
