Yup, they're hand forged from leaf springs.

I think you can still get KHHI knives from Amazon...

I recently received one from IMA.  LINK Supposedly 100 years old.  I ordered the sheath, but it was dry rotted so I tossed it.  The blade was covered in disgusting grease.

I did not know leaf-spring steel was used.  Thanks!

Now I want one, kind of fascinating how they make them with just the bare basics, no advanced heat treat station or grinding tools, just hammers, some water, and about $100 in power tools.

They might source different steel now but yeah, a lot of them were just made from good spring steel off trucks.

They start in their Grandpa's shop as a gopher when they're about six.  At 12, they start to hammer, working the coal fire, learning how to make simple farm tools. At 20, he can start up the shop and make lots of tools.  At thirty, he's still just an intermediate.  When they get to be around forty, they takeover their Dad's shop and become the Master Kami themselves.

Still considered an "Untouchable", but a Master Blacksmith.

There were a lot of dirty bare feet touching those knives.
