I have a Winchester 1885 single shot in .22mag. I shot it for the first time yesterday, love the thing!

However, Buckhorn sights ain't getting it. It shoots too high despite having the rear sight all the way lowered. I'm struggling to maintain consistent sight picture with the front/rear sight as well.

Right above the chamber, there's two screws for some sort of optic mount or perhaps a tang sight. Problem is, there's only two screw holes, not four like most rifles. Thus I have to use some sort of base that will extend out but can utilize only two holes to mount.

I was thinking of some sort of small 1x4 scope or maybe a red dot.

Anyone have any thoughts on what sort of base/mount I can look at using?

I'd give Talley a call.  I believe they make the OEM bases and rings for the rifle.

ETA:  Every time I've called them I've received top shelf service.

Maybe a local gunsmith could fit a taller front sight.

Is the crown dinged? Muzzle obviously out of square?

IME rifles with those style sights always shoot comically (uselessly) high. Because who doesn't zero their open sight squirrel rifle for 100yds?

First of all, what hold are you using?  Buckhorn sights are made for a 6 o'clock hold on a critter, not a center hold.  There is the term, "draw a small bead", in which the front bead or post is to be lowered into the center of the low notch.  That position is for close shots, or for a small target.

Nope, nope, nope.

Brand new rifle, groups are decent so no worries there.

No gunsmith in the area, sadly. Hence my thought about a 1x4 scope or small red dot.

At 50 yards I'm holding a shade below 6 o'clock. *I* don't like this type of sight hold.

Hanz nailed it.

From this article...https://gunsmagazine.com/rimfires/the-low-wall-22-wmr/

Quote......

"The Model 1885 base with Talley-style rings is marketed by Winchester under their name for $133. The price is exorbitant, but looking through the Brownells catalog for a less expensive alternative proved fruitless.

The forward mounting holes for the Talley base are located under the rear sight so a word of caution: To protect the top flat of the highly polished octagonal barrel from getting scratched as the rear sight is tapped loose from its dovetail, insert a slip of thick paper between the rear sight and barrel. Whoever had the test rifle before me didn’t and left some deep gouges across the top flat which I touched up with some 44/40 bluing solution."

Yeah, I found Talley on the web. I was unaware of the front base screw holes being under the rear sight, so thanks a lot for that info!

Talley bases are around $100, which ain't too cheap. There's also some issue with using a modern scope with their base I've read. Looks like I'll need to give them a call.

Thanks a lot for your info!

Something to consider, most rifles of that style and generation were sold with a tall front sight so it could be filed down to set elevation...

This is assuming that the front sight is a plain blade without a ball on the top.

It's not plain, it has a brass/gold bead on the front sight blade.

Talley is the ONLY option for an optic base it seems. $100 for the base, another $79 for their rings. Jesus.

Another option might be to get a spare rear sight, and then take one of 'em and cut the notch deeper and file the top of it down.

Or, where the dovetail is to hold the front sight in place it may be possible to dove tail something else into that that could provide a mount. Might be worth looking at what shape the cut is, etc. and maybe one of the RMR mounts could be modified to fit.

You can replace the front sight with a taller one.  Front sight you move opposite the direction you want to move the bullet impact, so if it's shooting high you need a taller front sight.
Marbles and Williams make the replacements.

Buckhorn sights you need to place the front bead as low as possible in the notch for your sight picture.

Skinner peep rear sights are also an option.  I will caution you though - your factory front sight might or might not be the correct elevation for the Skinner replacement.

The peep sight though does give you a more precise sight picture and can also function as a ghost ring sight if you screw out the aperture.

I ordered a Talley base & rings today. I think I'll go with a 1-6x24 Leupold scope I had on a 3 Gun AR.

Thanks to all who've contributed.

+1 on giving Skinner Sights consideration. I purchased a rear sight  for a Rossi “Ranch Hand” in .44mag. It transformed that gun from an awkward to an awesome shooter.
