My friends lives on a farm and only has a 12ga shotgun.

He wants to buy a cheap and reliable .22LR to ward off raccoons from his chickens.

Thoughts?  Are new 10/22's reliable?  I think he would go for a new one if they are reliable without changing parts and adding to the cost.

I have quite a few .22's but I splurge and spend way to much money on them so let me know you thoughts on something budget

Budget is $200ish

You can get a semi savage / marlin for $100 less than a 10/22.  $130.00 ??  10/22 is $230 IIRC. 10/22 is gtg though, if issues ruger is a+ for fixing issues.   Best option for cheap is used from legs / pawn shop. you could probably get a lightly uses semi savage / marlin for around $80.00.

heres a good example, if your wanting something cheap as possible, that will get the job done. this is at academy.

Ruger 10/22 Charger pistol w/ an arm brace.  Take off the brace and put on a stubby pistol tube, add a red dot, will be short and light enough for them to operate.  Going to war with the squirrels?

Whoops, not GD.

Ruger 10/22, end of list.
Reliable box mags.  Reliable 15 and 25 round mags. (if you buy the Ruger mags)  Plenty good enough accuracy for small game.
Use quality ammo (like CCI mini-mags) and it will run like a top.

Don't over-complicate this.

Visit some local pawn shops or gun shops and find a used 10/22.  Or buy a new one, they aren't that expensive.  The savage and marlins are good choices too, but you can't get the magazine capacity of a 10/22.

I prefer shooting bolt action .22s.  When the Fox is in the hen house I much prefer the 10/22 with CCI Stingers.  Bang bang bang bang until the Fox is down and dead or it’s out of sight.

Since having chickens I got 1 Fox with the 77/22.  Took a second shot to finish it
I shot at and likely hit two more but had both run offs with the 77/22, partially my fault for not automatically shooting the threat until it was down.  I know I hit.
I missed one opportunity with a Marlin 39a that had a cartridge fall off the lifter locking up the gun.  I did fix the gun but it’s reduced to squirrel work.
Moved on to the 10/22 and shot 4 foxes.   Two one shot stops, two with two shots each.

Use a semi auto is my recommendation.  A reliable lever or pump would be my second choice.   Bolt guns aren’t the best for ‘action’ shooting.   And I prefer them for other things.

I agree used is the way to go.  Any semi has enough rounds.  If you get or need more than three shots I would be surprised.  Unless you have multiple varmints at once that is.

In the past year, I have shot ~10 raccoons which seem to come in endless supply to raid my feeder.  At 50 yards, 22 simply is not reliable to drop them right there.  It will usually kill them, but they will run off and you have no idea where they are going down.

17 HMR has been much better for me.  The accuracy of the round allows me to go for a headshot and get it every time and the added punch drops them right there.

10/22
Savage
Marlin model 60

All fine rifles that will serve the purpose.

The 10-22 is the way to go. Right now cdnn has the factory laser for the 10-22 on sale for about $25 bucks. A 10-22 with that on it would be the ultimate night time coon rifle. Used ones here are around $125-$150

This is my experience also. They have been pretty relentless about going after my chickens and I've shot over 100 in the last few years. I switched to 17HMR for this very reason. I'm toying with bumping it up to 22 mag.

Marlin model 60 or 795, I’d personally get the 60 since it doesn’t have a magazine to loose and it’s purpise is to be a working gun. The full length mag tubes also hold quite a few rounds

I picked up three .22 LR's at $33/each at the LGS.

One for me, one for a 3 year old son of a cousin, and one as barter material. A complete sight of iron sights going on one for the youngster. I'm putting a grooved to 1" set of rings & a scope on mine. With an Aquila subsonic round, it is quieter than a pellet rifle.

At 50 yds a .22 lr from my Ruger MK I Target is more that sufficient.  Gotta hit them correctly as with anything else.

Just wanted to chime in that I've had more one shot stops on raccoons with CCI segmented subsonic .22 than any other type of .22.

As long as I can get a head shot, they almost always drop and go into death throes.

Least expensive... Marlin 60 semi that is accurate enough.
Great choice... Ruger 10/22 semi that is accurate with lots of accessories.

Marlin Model 60 is pretty accurate out of the box and cheaper, but 10/22 would do the job too.
