I am looking for my first .22 & I have a few criteria;
- Semi-automatic - Reliable - Accurate enough - Able to mount a scope Some of the ones that I am considering are 10/22, M&P 15-22, GSG 522, HK 416, but I am open to suggestions. Thank you for your tips. |

If you like to tinker buy a 10/22 and you can tinker forever with aftermarket parts.

If you really enjoy an AR pattern rifle you can't go wrong with a 15-22.
|
|
if you get a stock 10/22 and some time later decide you would like an AR style pistol grip and collapsible stock, you can always put the Ruger receiver in a chassis like a PMACA or similar

I am not a huge Ruger fan boy by any means, but would definitely say a10/22 is the best entry level semi rifle
If you want to stick to AR pattern then the 15/22 If you want a budget beater that works well, a new savage 64 runs about $125 brand new out the door in most shops. None of the above should be expected to be hyper accurate out of the box ( every once in a while you get lucky but wouldn’t bet on it) With the savage or 15/22 you live with what you get essentially With the 10/22 you have the option of tinkering with a slew of quality aftermarket parts out there. If you like the 10/22 beware they multiply in number and cost quickly Several shooters I know from nrl22 competition have over a thousand bucks in the custom 10/22’s they shoot |

10/22 take down with VQ firing pin (or EABCO firing pin) and a VQ extractor.

Big fan of the Marlin 60. 14 round tube feed. Man size gun. Dream to shoot.

Do you have an AR?
build a decicated 22 lr upper - buy some M&P15-22 mags and go to town.... It will pay for it's self in no time. think 6 cents vs 40 cents per round. Red |

I prefer my M&P 15-22 for general plinking and fun. Out of the box it is a better rifle...Better ergos (especially bolt catch), better trigger, reliable 25 round magazines, last round bolt hold open. BUT everyone should own at least one 10/22. You can customize the hell out of them. Tons of aftermarket parts available. Takedowns with the Magpul Backpacker stock are an excellent truck gun.

Quoted: Hard to beat the Ruger 10/22 series for versatility and aftermarket enhancements. If you want a semi-auto more unique and “ah” worthy with a history and heritage consider the Remington 552 Speedmaster BDL. Still in production, but a bit pricey. I have one of the original ones, over 50 years old, shown below. It’s been in my family since purchased new back in the early ‘60s. They have a long tube magazine and can shoot any .22 short, long or .22lr interchangeably, and are extremely reliable. Will likely continue to increase in value whether you buy a new one, or snag a good used one. The advantage the 552 and earlier 550-1 (got one of those, too) is not only will they fire and cycle shorts, but will also fire and cycle all subsonic .22 ammo, something the 10/22 cannot do. https://i.postimg.cc/1zwwBx7q/D24-BDEFA-7-A18-4196-90-BF-68-FD998-CCE62.jpg But, if you just want a knockabout .22lr semiauto for regular .22lr ammo, the 10/22 is the hands down choice. View Quote Nice rifle! I’d take a 552 over a 10/22 any day of the week. There’s one for sale local to me I’ve been struggling not to buy |

That's easy. If you want an AR pattern rifle the M&P15-22 is the undisputed best of the bunch. If you want a normal rifle style then the Ruger 10/22 is the best choice.
I have both, in addition to an HK MP5SD-22 and they are all fantastic. I'm not a huge fan of GSG, not because they are bad by any means but just because there are much better options. |

Get both .
If you like ar’s get the m&p If you want to switch parts get a 10/22 . |

If the 552 Speedmaster you are looking at is in good shape and you can get it at a fair price, don't let it get away. The seller probably doesn't know good they are. |

TCR22.
15-22 is a good choice as well if you need to mount lights for night time varmints or would like a dedicated AR trainer. |
|
Have to agree the 10/22 is hard to beat especially with regards to customization.
However, if you have a chance check out a Browning Buckmark rifle. I have one with the carbon fiber barrel option and it is incredibly compact, lightweight and accurate. With the vertical pistol grip has a similar feel to it as shooting an AR15. Only real drawbacks are lack of customizing options compared to a 10/22 and inability to use magazines greater than 10 rounds. Mine is one of my favorite firearms, with a mini red dot sight is a lot of fun to shoot, always makes it the range when I go shooting. |
|
Did anyone suggest the Ruger 10/22 yet? Ha!
If you have the green stamps, go and buy a Kidd 10/22 and be done with it. |

10/22. I can't even think what would be second place.
And, I'd get a takedown model, if I could find one (which you probably can't at this point). |
|
I enjoy my 10/22 in the takedown magpul stock, but hands down my dedicated .22 AR is my favorite.

For the previous poster with the Marlin Model 60, the old school ones were 18 round. But I have more fun with the 10/22.

777 (OP),
What did you decide? You really can't go wrong with the 10/22 or the S&W. |
|
10/22 is going to have the most support and accessories. Think about magazine availability, sight/optic options, stocks, repair parts, etc.
