I got this from my neighbor.
I don't know what the silver tip means but I'm sure it's something cool.
What is it?

Cartridge, Caliber .50, Ball, Armor Piercing Incendiary, M8 is the silver tipped.  Not sure what you've got there.

As others have said, it's a Hornady AMAX projo, 750 grs.

Did he tell you where he got it, who loaded it...?

The 1st gen AMAXs weren't as accurate as the next gen that came out about a year/year and half later. The center of gravity was moved a bit further back.

You have an AMAX round. The large aluminum tip is the give away.

I believe it's a factory round.
Unfortunately it was one of his son's bullets, who died a few years back.

Yep!  Looks like a reason to buy a gun if I ever saw one.

Has anyone said AMAX yet?

Seriously, probably HSM loaded ammo, they used WCC brass.

Hornady started out with WCC brass until finding someone to make the brass with their headstamp. CAL 50 was the Civilian headstamp for Winchester/Western brass, WCC was the military.

Haven't seen any new CAL 50 brass in a long time, think they just decided to stay with one headstamp instead of two.

HSM used both WCC and CAL 50 brass for years and I'm sure they're still using WCC brass to this day for 50 BMG. Probably a lot of other manufacturers do also as it comes primed and sealed. They used to send sealant for the end user to add to the necks, pretty sure the new brass comes with it already applied.

If you want any kind of accuracy, it needs to be removed, a bore brush chucked up in a drill will usually do the trick.
