Great in theory.

If they would have bent the bolt handle so the shooter's hand didn't scrape the rear sight tower, and if the Cetme front sight wasn't the dumbest idea ever...

It would have been great in practice.

The bolt and sight can be problematic, but they shoot really well.

Speaking of bent bolts...do FR8s use a standard 8mm bolt or were they modified/made from scratch for 7.62x51?

Looking at the rim dimensions they seem really close so I'm wondering if there's anything other than headspacing stopping me from grabbing a bent bolt out of an old piece of shit Czech or Turkish gun and slapping it into my FR8.

The FR8  I bought last year, someone had already bent the bolt on it and they did a really good job. It is a super handy little rifle.

You should be able to use an 8mm bolt without issue with 7.62x51. Of course, there's always the possibility that it may not work with a certain bolt, but generally it should.

Here is mine. It came with a brand new nylon sling and CETME bayonet.

Bolts are the same.  Except for the rear sight and magazine, everything from the receiver rearwards is unchanged from the original.  Most were converted from Spanish M43 rifles, but some were converted from Spanish M44 rifles, Polish rifles (whatever the M44's were patterned off of), Czech rifles (I forget which model), and German Gewher 98M rifles.  All were originally 7.92X57.  As long as you make sure that headspace is correct, any bolt that will interchange with a standard Mauser 98 bolt should work.  IIRC, there are some Mauser 98 variants that are not totally compatible with the rest, and obviously non-98s are a no-go.

My FR7 (seven) is the only military bolt action rifle I shoot regularly other than my M1898 Krag "carbine" (cut down rifle).  The FR7 is more of a carbine actually due to length.  7.62mm NATO is so much less expensive than .30-40.  Bent bolt handle was standard.  I believe this is based on the 1913 "Spanish Mauser" and the FR8 based on a 1940s receiver (?).

My FR7 needs a new rear sight aperture wheel.  Any sources?
