Simply make one take a piece of steel and drill and tap it and mark it.

I use thread gauges and will also use a micrometer to measure the major outside diameter on small machine screws. My eye sight isn't what it use to be and some of the metric machine screws are really close to standard size.

All I ever use are a set of dial calipers, and a thread pitch gauge.

That thread tool I posted above works great trimming screws that are too long . Run the screw in cut or grind some off, bevel the edges and back out .
