I would look for an older charger, like one you find ata yard sale. Or on eBay. Reason being that the new chargers have safeties built in that may not let it operate if it is not charging a battery.
I tried to use a newer charger for etching and I never could get it to work right. I ended up using 9volt batteries.

Search around for a used Variac.

You'll need an analog old school battery charger. The new ones have "smart technology" to keep the battery from over charging or tell you the alternator is bad.

I use an old charger to etch. I have used it on knife blades, gun builds, and From 1 stuff.

Check out the various knife making forums about etching they have this down to a science.

If you're buying something, don't get a charger, get a power supply. Not sure how much amperage you need, this should be plenty:

Don’t try to use a battery charger or a VariAC (WTF?) or any other shade-tree BS.

Get a current-regulating power supply. You want one good for 10 amps or better (so you can run it safely at about half that).

I’ve anodized a lot of lowers including the one in my avatar.
