I use both 5010 and 860 for ap and ball. My start load is 215 grain for both powders and stuck with 215 for my M107a1 20"

I bought a shit ton of 872wc years ago and use it for api amd fmj. Match i use the H50. Since the fmj surplus dried up and loaded ammo is so cheap i havent loaded in years for fmj

Would I be smart to sell my AP and FMJ projectiles and use the proceeds for Solids? Seems like they are pretty damn close pricewise nowadays. Is there anything I need to know about loading the conventional looking solids? Not the bore riders.

Thank you ARsR4ME, I appreciate that. I am really trying to piece together decent starting to mid loads for .50 and it has been difficult. 215gr seems to be one of those magic numbers from waht I am gathering.

215grs is what I recommend to anyone that's just starting out, it's a mild load and doesn't beat you up or the brass.
It works for most powders and all bullets, from ball to AMAX but on some newer pull down powder you need to be careful. There's been a couple guys here that reported that 215grs was showing signs of over pressure. For the AR-50 and AMAX I use 222grs and load them to 5.71" OAL. Talking to another board member he said he got up to 240grs with H50, no pressure signs and had good accuracy. You just need to keep an eye on anything that shows signs of over pressure. If you start to notice any, STOP and back down. I got some really good results with Vhitavoury powder but I don't shoot matches so the cost really isn't worth it to me to use it full time. If you shoot alot of tracers, 5010 is the best choice for them. Or you can take and poke a small hole in the tin foil cover on the base of the projo. Only do this to the ones that you plan on using at the shoot you're going to. Tracer elements are hygroscopic, attracts moisture and when they swell cause the necks to split. By poking a hole it will ensure that the tracer will light all the time. Be safe! |
