Would one of these get the steel hot enough to form, or what's a cheap option?

I'm trying to peen the pommel on a shortened M7 and have tried smacking the crap out of it with a peen hammer but it hasn't helped much. I'm guessing I'll need to get it hot to soften it up some.

Probably not.

Not sure how.thick that is, or how big, but. that's probably not going to get it hot enough I'd think.

Butane will burn hot enough to get it cherry.  I would be more concerned with losing temper and getting things hot you don't want hot.  If you know for sure it is 1050, and add in the fact that you can't peen, it is probably hardened.  Does it need to be?  It won't be after you heat it up.

So finally got my torch. Question about the heat treat, would getting it red hot after peening then dunking in water do anything?

May crack, quench in oil instead.

If you can heat the bare end of the tang, I would try to get it to a dull red heat, hold it at that approximate temp for a minute or 2, and let it air cool. Repeat this 2-3 times and try peening again.
Do not heat it cherry red and quench, as this will harden it.

MAP gas torch from Home Depot - the yellow cylinder is what you want.  Immerse the part of the 1050 item that you dont want to anneal in water.

Thanks.

Judging by the replies I think I'll just skip it.

If I ever do have you use it for what it's designed for I doubt it being hardened will matter

You're welcome.  They might induction-heat that in the factory, and then form it while it's still red-hot.  I'm not sure.
