I'm thinking about submitting a form 1 on my 17.  My question is about engraving.  Has anyone engraved the lip where the upper overlaps the lower?  Is there room?
I always try to be as discreet with my engraving as possible.  On my AR's I have them engraved inside the trigger well where the trigger comes out of the receiver.

I'd do it there or on the last few T-slots of the upper rail.

I engraved mine on the top rails alternating every other open T mark. Throw a ladder cover on top and it's covered.

PMM did mine that way, looks great!

If you need the barrel chopped, they do that also.

Not really, rub some tan paint in the letters and it would disappear.

*edit. If you're around Springfield I'll let you borrow my engraver...

Capitol Armory did mine at that location. No one would ever see it if I didn't point it out.

Incorrect. It has to be visible on the outside of the rifle when you "make" the SBR, but accessories are allowed to cover it later on. Think of all the Redi-mags that cover AR engraving, the claw mounts that cover HK engraving, etc.

My ACR and ARX are marked this way too.

Why not just engrave on the barrel? A 13" on the SCAR should have plenty of room to engrave there...and yes, the barrel is an approved engraving location.

Not so much space to engrave on the 10.5" 16 barrel, but there should be plenty on the 17's barrel.

I've never heard of NFA engraving on the barrel.  I thought it had to be on the receiver. That would be ideal....

From the ATF NFA Handbook, chapter 6:

The serial number must be engraved or stamped on the receiver of the firearm and the caliber, model, and identification of the maker must be engraved on the barrel or frame or receiver of the weapon.96
The marking and identification requirements for a maker are the same as for a manufacturer.  Refer to section 7.4 for a detailed discussion of the requirements.

mine is engraved on the bottom of my barrel, if you have a kdg rail it's barely visible from the slots on the rail.
