Biggest difference is 640 core on the e-COTI versus 320 core on the original. “E” is also more rugged / not as fragile and, rumor has it, that the “E” has a less deleterious effect on i2 tubes than the earlier models.

Unfortunately, they didn’t take this opportunity to expand the circle to the full 40* image diameter, which is stupid and still sucks. The Brits did it years ago and got it right. I don’t see why they didn’t follow suit.

No noticeable lag that I have seen so far.

Seems to do a much better job of overlaying the thermal.

Higher resolution is nice.

Lighter weight is nice.

Have not had a chance to see anything at further range to compare, the E-COTI lens is smaller than the COTI so I am kinda wondering about that.

Restriction is off-and-on with the e-COTI. Only recently did it go back on restriction. I presume is has to do with availability and .GOV orders. As I understand it, it’s basically up to the manufacturer (Optics1, in this case) unless some Alphabet Soup agency requests restriction of a particular product, but I doubt that’s the case with the COTI.

ETA: I almost suspect a bit of marketing ploy in this case. Create a sense of urgency when it becomes available, for a short time, to the civilian market again — “Hey look! They’re available again! Snag one quick while we still can!”

1. If they made it 40 deg 640 instead of 30 deg 640 there would be no increase in resolution over 20 deg 320. 30 deg 640 improves both FOV and resolution.

2. Is the ECOTI a smaller chip? Smaller chip means smaller lens. EDIT: 25 um vs 17 um core so yes, thats why the smaller lens.

Safran Optics is the parent manufacture. And no marketing ploys at stake in that regard.

What's the power up time on the E COTI and COTI?

I don't necessarily need an external battery but I definitely need more than 3 hours per night. It if can be turned on and off quickly it might still work without an external battery

The Breach is terrible when it comes to rapid on/off

Power up is not bad, I just leave it on and swap out battery when it runs low. Easy to do without removing it from the nods. The beauty of the coti and e-coti is it giving you thermal info while on the move. Run time is better on the e-coti.

I have a lot of time with the Breach + PVS14 combo and like it but want higher resolution, plus I love my binos and want the best of both worlds

Coti/e-coti are not going to necessarily give you better resolution than a breach. There purpose is more or less short range detection while using nods. I use outline most of the time, it gives the best detection range. When I dectect something in the distance and I cant’t determine what is is, I either use my ir patrol or 3x magnifier to positivity id.

It has a 2- 3 second fire up time with 2 hours run on the COTI aka TACS-M and 2 1/2 on the ECOTI. I'm trying to find a 3.0V rechargeables to use, but so far no luck.
I thought about selling my TACS-M to fund a Breach, but being able to navigate with a fused image, turning it on/off vs lifting it out of the way, and the light weight even with binos on keeps me from selling it. If I needed to locate game I'd go with a breach all day long, but for CQB work or near dark lighting you can't beat a fusion system.

Its absolutely amazing in the pine forests/ swamps around me.

See all kinds of things I would never see if I stopped and scanned with handheld or weapon mounted thermal.

As long as you adjust the brightness level to something living before wandering around they both do a great job.

Both the coti and e-coti have an auto mode. Depending on conditions there can be a lot of "clutter". The nice thing is you can go into the menu and set parameters and virtually eliminate false readings. My use is mostly heavily wooded areas and by changing the settings I can adjust it so just animals just pop out. That being said, anytime I get a heat signature I typically further investigate it with my ir patrol. I am not sure how it will deal with rocks that are warmed by desert sun.

No more than any other light source. You are not typically looking a something continuously. I use mine regularly and no I'll effects so far.

What image would you see if you were wearing a PVS and E-COTI while driving a blacked-out truck through a field at night? Specifically I mean looking through the windshield.

I drive all night with my WP NV, and scan with my Pulsar gear. Wondering how E-COTI will work with driving.

The thermal image is a flat white or black image when you look at a windshield depending on polarity. I usually turn the brightness down on the thermal and the i2 image is easy to see.

No issues looking through a wind shield with the COTI or E-COTI, on Outline or Patrol mode with the brightness properly adjusted, the thermal FOV "disappears" unless it senses something, so you can look straight through it without any ill effects unless there's a significant change in temperature, and with Outline/Edge Detect, you're still going to see through the "center," if that makes sense.

While some of the E-COTI's augmented reality features can be used "stand-alone," most of those features are designed to be used with various Mission Command applications that are also restricted to LE/military use, so not all of them will be usable as an individual when using the E-COTI.

The current restriction on the E-COTI has everything to do with contracts and availability from Safran Optics1--the guys that got them recently can attest to the difficult lead times SO1 gave for the delivery of this last batch of commercial units, however the AN/PAS-29A COTI is currently available commercially, but for the time being, the E-COTI is not, though we are working on trying to get at least some made available for commercial sales again.

I have had some odd occasions where I can see a thermal reflection in my side mirrors (will try to get some video of it in the near future) using Outline mode--which should not be possible and I cannot explain at this point other than probably being a programming/software artifact.

+1000 for the E-Coti avaialbility, it has nothing to do with commercial sales like that to restrict to generate hype that has been an internet rumor at times. We begged borrowed and stole to get the recent orders filled and it was a test of patience to say the least. And yes before someone brings up the repeated pay before you receive (for their own sales hype and dagger throws

) ....ALL customers were asked repeatedly not to pay and were asked REPEATEDLY if they wanted their monies returned. Feel free to ask the OP on this thread how many times we pestered him and the rest to return monies and the amount of meetings and paperwork TNVC had to undergo several times to meet the ever changing requirements.
