I've got an old Stevens 311 sitting in NICS jail at a LGS up the road. I've also got a hacksaw, a reasonable skill set, and $200. Now I'm looking for gun porn / inspiration / ideas while I wait for NICS to clear. Hook a brother up?

I’ve got an old Stephens double barrel 16ga that my dad gave me. It would be cool as a shorty but I’m too sentimental about things to give it the chop. The wood work used to be rough but when I was about 12 I took all the wood off of it and sanded it all down and refinished it. I doubt it would’ve ever been worth anything but I was and am proud of it. Still looks damn good.

No sentimental attachments on this one. It just happened to be the second-least expensive SxS on the LGS rack that day. It's in pretty rough shape, and it *may* have a minor bulge in at least one barrel. But it's got potential. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with it.

Can’t help you with a SxS because I SBS’d an O/U but any configuration you choose is fun.

What length did you cut those barrels to, my friend? And how's the pattern with various loads?

I think I've seen this in another thread somewhere, but can you please give a brief description of the process used on the grip and handguard to get that look?  I've got an O/U project underway and would like to do something a little different.

The barrels were cut down to 9” and is Cylinder Bore so the pattern is pretty tight at 9 or 10 yards but that’s it. As far as loads goes I only shoot Aguila Mini 00 Buck and Mini Slugs.  FPS is still 1,200 so that ain’t bad.  2 3/4” rounds are pretty brutal and I wouldn’t think about 3” magnums.

Sure, take a hand saw and cut the stock just behind the grip portion.  Next go to your disc and belt sander and go to town shaping it into a birdshead shape.  Finish with increasingly finer sand paper.  I cut the barrels down as short as I could and not interfere with the forend hardware.  I then took my saw and cut the handguard just to 1/4” behind the muzzle of the barrels.  Reshaped the forend on the belt sander and finished both the grip and forend with Pebble Finish Rustolium paint.  The finish has held up quite nicely for almost 5 years now.

So I bought the 311A last Saturday while I was poking around in a LGS in New Hampshire (no sales tax!). Predictably, NICS cleared while I was at work Monday morning.

Drove back over and fetched it home. Looks like this. 28" barrels, choked modified and full. Nothing special, but it's growing on me.

It's got a few minor scuffs and rust spots. Should clean up all right.

Some research on the interwebs turned up the production date code scheme for these guns. They apparently used a letter code from A = 1949 through V = 1968. Assuming that's an R, that'd be 1964. Anybody know about the numbers with it? 24th week, maybe?

I'm still deliberating on where to apply the saw. I'll drag out the tape measure tomorrow and do some more thinking.

Here's mine.  Stoger Uplander with 12" barrels.  It is as close as I could get to a Road Warrior replica from movie stills.

Using S&B 00 Buck.

I've noticed that most everyone seems to turn their double barrel into a literal hand cannon. I just filed for a stamp for a Stoeger SxS coach gun. My intent is to cut it off after the wood forearm stops, but leave the full stock. In every video I see, people's wrists are usually demolished when firing these things one handed. Is there no love for a regular stocked short SxS?

I bought a cheap Ithaca 20 I want to chop. I figured I’d chop it two or three times to practice before I decided on final length.

I'm planning to. LOP is currently 14.5", with a hard plastic butt plate. I'm thinking to shorten that to about 12", including a Limbsaver pad.

The barrels are currently 28" long. I'll likely prune that back to about 12.5". That'll put the muzzles about 3/4"forward of the existing tip of the forend wood. OAL should work out to about
26" after the initial hack job. Plan is to shoot that for feels. I may go shorter on one or both ends (would like to), but I don't want to blow a hand off just to have a cool range/HD toy.

I'm definitely going to shorten the stock on this one, but I'm keeping it as a shoulder-fired weapon. I may do the Mad Max clone in future. But I'll find a 20 gauge donor gun for that. !2 gauge is a bit more recoil than I want to deal with one-handed.

Mine is a full stock like I think you are intending to do.  I haven't had time yet, but I want to shorten the stock a little bit to make it look more proportional to the overall length.

Not mine, but this is a pic from someone who documented his SBS project on a website somewhere (can't find the site at the moment).   This illustrates what he shortened.  What he did with the buttstock is essentially what I want to do to mine although I probably won't cut quite that much.

This is pretty much what I'm going to do. Only difference being that I figure to take less off the stock, and do it in smaller bites there and the barrel end. Great visualization aid, though.

I bought this 1962, 311A for $260 with intent to chop. It looks barely used with some pitting on the barrels and light scratches on the stock, but the action is still tight.  I'm waiting to shoot it to start the form 1.  It's kind of growing on me, so  If it shoots nice it might be hard to cut it down.

Yup. Definitely gonna have to do something there. Solder is one possibility, and very likely the best way to proceed. How can you go about blacking the solder once the deed is done? IIRC, silver solder won't take blue. And a shiny solder plug would stick out like a sore pecker.

Another possibility is using JB Weld to fill the gap. Not certain I like the idea, butt... I have seen it talked/written about from folks in the cowboy action shooting community.

You could cut a piece of steel zactly to fit btween the bbls, put your solder in, solder that piece in last. hit it w/ cold blue.

I have a pre-serial SxS I may cut down and do this. I've wanted a decent side by side donor gun for years but haven't found one at a reasonable price. I like the idea of a stock and like 9" barrels. Not full stock, but hand cannons seem to be popular and if you'r paying to go short may as well go whole hog, right?

Saw a Stoeger Tactical locally for a good price and am tempted to grab it for a host. Thing is already butt ugly so it's no big loss I just don't know if it's too ugly to chop.

That’s because they are shooting it one handed.....WRONG.  You take your off hand and place it “on top” of the barrels, well behind the muzzle.  That way your off hand holds the shorty DOWN under recoil.   The recoil is greatly diminished saving your wrist from unnecessary pain.

Mine does not recoil up at all.  It is all straight back.  In the video I posted, the rise is mostly do to my really sweaty hands because it was so hot the day I was shooting.  The recoil is stout, but not wrist breaking.  Just hold on to the damn thing.

I figure it's about time to resurrect this thread...

I'd been holding off on this project in case I got quarantined or something. No such luck. Anyway, the eForm 1 cleared 01/16/20. Daughter and I dragged it out of the safe and got after it. Before picture is up above in this thread. Nothing special. After picture:

Nothing's been done at this point other than sawing it off. Turns out my belt grinder needs work before we continue the project.

Here's what we did...

- barrels: were 28", now 10".
- forearm shortened by 2.5"
- stock bobbed by 3"
- LOP was 14", now 11"
- OAL is right at 23" as it sits

It's slated to get a thick, cushy recoil pad, so LOP and OAL will change to reflect that. Other than that, shaping the wood, finishing the barrels, and maybe some refinishing work. We shall see.

Thanks for the compliment. I'll try to keep this incredible dog of a thread up to date as the adventure continues.

We're definitely going to refinish the wood. Thinking about re-blueing the barrels, too. The sticking points at present are (1) selection of available recoil pads is looking pretty limited, out of stock in lots of places. And (2) I've got to re-wire my tired old belt grinder before I can start on the woodwork and such.

Awesome update! I filed my stamp through silencer shop in April. Got dicked around and it was rejected, finally refiled last week.

I’m probably going to do exactly what you did. I found an old rubber recoil pad in my box of stuff so I’ll cut down with adding that length in mind.

How did cutting the barrels go and what did you do it with?

Ya know, it’s pretty simple to file it yourself on the ATF site... My last one took all of half an hour.

I used a Makita 14” cut-off saw with a DeWalt blade. Pretty much like this:

I clamped a length of 2x2 angle iron in the machine, as a base for my setup  Once that was checked for square and solid, I shimmed the barrels to have a square cut. Be advised that the barrels taper in two dimensions, so you’ll need to shim under and behind them. Once all was double-checked, just hack it off. My setup was a bit off, so I’m gonna have to file <1/64” from one side to square it up.

How old? They tend to stiffen up over time, though I'd expect it'd still be better than hard plastic or metal.
