I went with a new Boyd's stock.  Lightly sanded with 800 grit and applied 8 coats of tung oil (curing AT LEAST 24 hours between coats). Picked up the USGI vented handguard from someone here on arfcom who is local to me. Bought the stock hardware (w/ front ferrule and upgraded buttplate) from Treeline.
Once the 8th coat of tung oil cured, it was just a matter of assembly.
(ETA: front ferrule was epoxied into place with Slow Cure 30 minute epoxy.)

A friend did similar with his only in GI wood. I remember him sitting on the 100 yard bench just nailing a small steel plate with it. I love short rifles.

I think he bought a smaller profile front sight from Smith or Sadlak for it and replaced the fat tritium.
