Short version, is commercial .308 safe to fire in a FAL vs using 7.62 milsurp or commercially loaded equivalent.

Specific rifle is a DSA STG-58CP Austrian Para FAL

.308 and 7.62X51 are the opposite of ..223 and 5.56 as far as pressure goes. 7.62x51 is lower pressure then modern .308 so sometimes caution is needed when shooting .308 in 7.62x51 Mil weapons.

That is what I had thought, I had understood .308 pressures were different.  So is there concern using .308 in FAL's of this sort?

I'm fairly certain that the whole ".308 has significantly higher pressures than 7.62" thing was debunked years ago.  The concern before than was use in certain Mauser conversions that were marginal in terms of safety with that cartridge, and others that were perfectly safe but which some people thought had safety issues (like the FR-8, which is a 98 action).  Unless were talking about Hornady Light Magnums or crap like that, it shouldn't be an issue even then.  With the FAL, I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about it. The mess about the chamber pressure differences started because the military used a different method of measurement for pressure. Really, if tested the same way the difference wouldn't be significant.
