When I first shot a few Uzis, they were all stock MGs, and that heavy bolt moving back and forth made it feel real choppy. And therefore not very accurate compared to other 9mm SMGs I'd shot.

Then Vector bought the batch of receivers, and I couldn't pass on the low price. Bought one and haven't regretted it one iota.

I talked to Vector about the ROF and they suggested I try some cut-down semi buffers. They were selling them at $9 each, cut to whatever length you wanted. I bought ones in 0.5", 0.75", 1.0" and 1.4" (the longest you could use and still have it stop on the sear).

With the 0.75 and 1.0 the ROF is boosted to around 750-850 rpm (depending on the ammo) and the Uzi smoothes right out -- a completely different gun. I loved it. With the 1.4" and a can, you can get the ROF above 1,000 rpm. What a hose!

Next I added a .45ACP conversion, which runs noticeably faster than 9mm, and you really appreciate the Uzi's weight. It's also very accurate.

Finally, I added a .22RF conversion and sent it to Richard Hoffman at BWE. He tuned it to my gun and did his slow fire conversion. Wow! It runs at around 650 rpm and is by far the most reliable rimfire SMG conversion I've ever shot. Being open-bolt means it also runs longer between cleanings (compared to finicky M16 .22 conversions).

In all three calibers, it's the Energizer Bunny of SMGs. I used to enjoy tinkering at the range, but as I've gotten older, I lean more toward guns that always, always go "bang." For that, the Uzi is perfect.
