My next battle rifle will be the K&M M17s308.
Bullpup using many standard DPMS parts.

A little update…. Just sold the standard weight 16” .308 barrel. The LW really makes the rifle handle a lot better since you’re losing all of that weight from out front.

So how are the Aero Precision M5's. I just recently purchased a 16" upper and just need to get the lower and other goodies. Easier for me to Piece one together on my budget.

I like Aero receivers, handguards, and buffers, but I opt for a barrel of my own choosing. 90% Aero issues seem to stem from undersized gas ports on their Ballistic Advantage barrels.

The LW barrel turns the MWS into a totally different rifle.

Yes it absolutely does. I can’t wait for MLOK uppers to make an appearance again too. Going to grab one to save a bit more weight. All of that weight is up front so the LW barrel isn’t “just” saving you a few ounces.

You should take a strong look at the SIG 716I.

Op here, awesome thread gentlemen.  Still deciding what to do lol.  Pretty sure I'm going to pick up a PTR91 with the rail, or go the exact opposite and get an LMT.

Either will be fun. The PTR is cheaper hand has more soul but the LMT will be, as already discussed, both more versatile and expensive.

Try it out first, preferably with a few different types of ammo. There's a good chance it will operate just fine. If it has issues, the most likely culprit is the gas port. If you're handy with a drill and calipers, you can open up the gas port yourself. If that checks out, the buffer weight is the next thing to look at.

You ain't kidding.  But man, the 417/MR762 is probably the coolest looking AR variant (imo).

Yes, have a scar 17, FAL, Cetme, mdrx, and ar10. I really only shoot the ar10 out of the group. I like the scar but I thought it was expensive when I got it for 2800, the 3800 price now is not worth it in my view. Ar10 is just a better option and getting a dam nice rifle at 2-2.5k while spring the rest on a nice optic and maybe a 2nd caliber upper is just a better option.

Have 2 garands, an M1A, and a Sig 716i.  That Sig sure is a nice rifle for the price.  Since purchasing it, the M1A gets little use.

Agree! After getting my 716I, I got rid of my SOCOM16. I actually traded it for another SIG this time a 716G2 Patrol. The 716's are reliable and fun shooters.

I have an M1A Loaded, an M1A Scout Squad, and a matching pair of Aero M5's in 7.62, one of which was a 6.5 Creed upper, but I am selling that due to lack of use.  The Loaded was a gift from a friend for reasons.  I traded smartly to acquire the Scout Squad.  I bought/assembled the M5s.  For character, the M1As are my babies all day.  I love the aesthetic, the DNA, and the history.

For blue helmeted zombie survival world, I'd pick the Aeros first.  The M1A's and M5's are comparable in weight and size, magazine capacity and optics.  While the M1A Loaded is stupid accurate, the M5s win instantly in repeatability.  I get the classic heat shift from both M1As.

When I was a lurker before joining to post recently,  your glowing reviews of the 716i were influential in my decision to buy. I won't get rid of my M1A, or Garands....to much history and nostalgia for me.

This is not even a choice. AR10 platform. Beats the absolute shot out of the m14/M1A

Better trigger, mounting system, more aftermarket parts, lighter weight, cheaper and more variety of mags, can be easily made more accurate than a stock m1A. Most AR10s are easily free floated by anyone. More reliable, can be cheaper, buying a scope mount to even bolt on is not needed, more common.

Iron sights only on a .308 battle rifle is retarted, especially nowadays

Sig 716i/AR10

But, I'm currently looking long at the Zastava M77

The right answer!

I have all of those; I'll take my AR-10s before the rest. The others are range toys for me. The only other rifle that interests me is the Robinson XCR-M.

If not an AR-10 there is always a Galil ACE.

A Garand would be ok too I reckon.

It may surprise a lot of folks but police in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil (a country that still makes FALs) carry Armalite AR-10 carbines:

Had a Cetme so have a ton of cheap G3 mags.  Sold it.  Had 3 FALs and have a bunch of cheap metric mags, got into hog hunting so I stopped shooting them.  Sold the rifles, still have the mags.  Also stacked x51 when AIM and whoever else had Port, SA, and whatever else was available 20 years ago.  Also got out of AKs.  Ditto, have ammo and mags.  I mostly have 5.56 ARs, a blackout, and a few 6.8s; I really enjoy these calibers/rifles, especially 6.8.  I live in the country and while not a doomsday prepper I feel uncertain about our civic order going forward.  Do I need a 7.62x51 battle rifle?  Penetration of cover?  I like FALs/G3s but fuck they are heavy and cumbersome.   Would you reinvest in a G3 clone or another FAL or ditch all the x51 mags and ammo and either invest in other calibers or get other gear?  Since I have the mags it'd be either a G3 clone or FAL.  I FAL at $2k seems a little ridiculous.  A $1k PTR would seemingly fulfill the same purpose.....if there is one?  I have NV and thermal.

I would buy at least one. A good AR-10 or a SCAR 17. I like my new Daniel Defense DD5V3. Handles better than my SCAR 17. The SCAR is bomb proof after ten years of ownership, but you have to be mindful when attaching a muzzle device to its pencil barrel when running suppressed (Dead Air makes a scar specific flash hider). Time will tell how well the DD5 holds up, but I’m sure it will run like my DD4V7.
