It’s the collimation of years of experience.
@Harlikwin helped me with several different questions. @SkyPup made me envious of his bajillion thermal toys. Dino was always super helpful and knowledgeable or knew where to find info. I feel @TheHorta ‘s pain regarding confiscation. |

Glad to see you haven't packed it in yet Skypup!
I remember you beong a wealth of knowledge when it comes to thermal, setting up NVGs and using these optics for hunting/pest control. I also remember the kind comments you made on my first ARFCOM post when I reviewed the Sirius many many moons ago Unfortunately I never got to go yote hunting in NC with my Sirius, but I did get to use it for pest control. Girlfriend's family has a small farm, and for awhile, the property next door was an animal assisted therapy place for recovering drug addicts and alcoholics. While I'm all for helping people get cleaned up and fix their mistakes, the idiots who owned it got shut down by the state for charity fraud. What happened after they got shut down? These scumbags abandoned the property and left all the remaining animals (pigs, emus, rabbits, goats, etc) to fend for themselves and die . Well one of the animals that was left behind was a ton (100+) of domestic rats being bred for use as snake food. Well once these assholes left, the rats got lose, began to turn feral and began to wreak havoc on all the neighboring properties. While I do have a soft spot for domestic rats, having a ton of now feral rats running around that can spread diseases, do serious damage to properties and invite nasty predators like foxes, venomous snakes, and raccoons? It's a liability to her farm animals and therefore the occupants of the home, and depending on the day, a toddler. The neighbors, her father, and her brother shot a lot of the rats, and oddly i never saw a single rat when I was out there, not even eyeshine, being out there for an hour or two. Apparently they just went into hiding, she told me her family has still seen one or two scurrying around occasionally, and if they become a problem again, I will be ready to deal with em. Because of the presence of other people, and buildings, I used low powered .22 subsonics, more than enough power to be humane, but since those won't cycle in a semi , I used an old Remington Nylon Model 11 with a 4 power scope, then I clamped a high wattage green color flashlight to the scope, and had my Sirius+Ops Core FAST for spotting. Figured I'd spot with the NV, and then hit the green light to aim with the scope take a shot since green doesn't seem to scare off the rats. In the future, I'd love to get an actual dedicated setup for day/night use. Something like a semi auto .22 or 5.56 carbine fitted with a NV compatible red dot, low magnification scope, or perhaps a digital NV unit, appropriate flash hider and maybe an IR/Visible laser sight. But given my budget at the moment? I don't think that's going to be feasible anytime soon. |

I think we're all tired of the bs and the forum has changed for the better. Tell him to come back. And I ain't patting myself on the back, yes I started this NV forum 14 years ago for the community as no one was talking NV on line and as @diz stated a memorable post a few months ago what really has happened at times. This forum was chalked with some amazing NV folks back then. Problems in the past? Heck just last week a former Vendor shit on us in colossal back handed behind the scenes set up and was caught doing it. All respect NSF, yea been tired of the BS. Remember, it was the OP who said this forum sucked and wanted to know what happened to these folks. I don't think it sucks, NV is still a hobby to me first and foremost a love of mine. I met some amazing folks here and made some great friends, and I get pretty angry when friends get shit on because of guilty by association. As for Dino (he endured the worst from many around here), unless I'm sorely mistaken (and yea I've been proven wrong in the past) will not be around anytime soon. Edit... OUT |

All I was trying to get across is that my opinion is it turns people off to come on here and read this vendor drama stuff. People want to come on here ask questions and see pictures of cool shit and if we’re lucky a nice ass shot from one of MrPlayer’s honeys (haven’t seen one of those in a while).
It’s no good for people to be on here bashing vendors, each other, playing games, and it seems the moderators are staying on top of it. You guys do get a lot of shit and I’ve seen where it’s been undeserved so I get where you’re coming from but not everything is a planned attack either. |

View Quote The thing is when we do this forum the right way, where we have fun, admit the 7's are better, and help each other out we all benefit. Also, you have to post astronomy pictures and your lack of new content hurts. I wish you vendors would take the shit to the pit though and just blast each other like the rest of us have to do when we got beef. Do it. Look, tell them to come back. Everyone that just lurks and posts occasionally now needs to post now more than ever. Ask stupid questions (except the "hey im new what should I buy" which prompts the obvious answer of dual tubes and unfilmed tubes), bust open your esoteric shit and make guides for repair and cool stuff like we get. Share. Free information for these devices that are to be extinct like vacuum tubes is something the rest of the world will need to have a 100 years from now to understand what it was like for us to use analog eyes. Night vision is the last little bit of magic left in a world full of dry digital recreations illuminated by the soulless LED windows that mock our cones and rods with their devilish blue light. We are the wardens of the obsolete and the protectors of the green and chrome realm. Lights out, Nods down, pinkies up. We were always meant to see how God intended us to see which is why he gave us stories of the Cyclopes to encourage us to make the pinnacle technology known as the 7, which is also God's number. Coincidence? |

Definitely been some loss of talent. Not a week goes by that I don't get a call or email from someone who says they were attacked here for disagreeing with someone and told they would "get them banned" or got a bunch of nasty PM's from them, etc.
I realize it's just the internet but if people just acted like adults instead of spoiled kids, everything would be easier for the staff and all of us. But I fully understand there is only so much you can let pass before you have to respond. |

I can’t believe it’s been 3 years since finding that killer deal on those DRS E6000s direct from Sierra Olympic and then seeing people make their own pan-tilts using modified Golight housings. So there I am, shaking hands with the most important man in history. Somewhere, on a disk or storage device buried long ago, taken on a really old Nokia phone camera, is a picture of Me and Chuck Yeager, and he still had the surprised look on his face. So if he ever reads this, and still remembers that idiot in Melbourne who couldn't open a door like a normal human being in 2000, sorry Mr Yeager. OK, that has nothing to do with Night Vision, except the first bit. Quoted: Forum gold right here. View Quote But I can definitely agree there's something special about good old vaccum tube tech. Sadly 30-50 years from now people probably won't even recognize the iconic high pitched whine that gated NV units make (especially Gen1) when they're turned on. Down the line we may be some of the only people who do remember using them when they're put out to pasture, considered obsolete relics and collect dust at an antique store like VCR tapes, tape recorders and typewriters. SWIR cameras and MWIR cameras are probably the future, electron bombarded CCDs seem promising too. Though I've always wondered if a "cascade" CCD or CMOS camera would work, having multiple capacitor arrays stacked back to back like the old "starlight" PVS-2 and Russian 1PN34 scopes to amplify the electrons available and create greater light amplification, assuming it doesn't cause terrible frame rate, resolution and motion blur and has a screen with the frequency to keep up. But otherwise, thermal imaging used to cost thousands of dollars for a barebones unit with mediocre resolution, sensitivity and detection range. Now there's units that cost under $700 and are light years better than the older "low end" thermal devices, and can also be mounted to a cell phone. SWIR/MWIR cameras right now cost $10k bare minimum, but I have a feeling like thermal, there will be advancements and discoveries made to significantly improve performance and also to hack off the number of digits on the price tag. |

Not for the Military. They can't detect a whole range of OOB technology and rely on the fact that every night is a full-moon under SWIR. Once inside, you lose the edge real quick. Also, MWIR isn't really in the same camp. It's up there with LWIR. David. View Quote But even if that's true, as you said, the longer wavelength is also a curse because you also cannot detect anything in the NIR wavelength, which could be a liability. This especially comes true when you can't see the IR beam from the sniper shooting at you from 200 meters away and they've got a Dragunov fitted with an old combloc NSP-2 scope. MWIR from what I saw seemed interesting as well because the photos I had seen were remarkably crisp and clear, it seemed to work better than standard long wave thermal imaging at night time and had a longer detection range, I wondered if it could be useful as a fusion device for both night vision and thermal detection, but being fair, high end LWIR seems to be capable of similar things anyway and MWIR, while impressive, is probably not going to be adequate for simply manuevering in dark environments, normal LWIR thermal isn't really recommended for that task either, its mainly used for detection of animals, people, electronics, heat sources, etc. Since you've been doing this for much longer than I have, and I've still got some things to learn, what do you think the future of night vision would be? Thank you for the assistance. |

That is in no way an attack against any specific vendor, because many of you post great tech content to the forum. That being said, there are some very active facebook nv groups, and I am guessing that is also why these forums got a lot more stale than they were 3-4 years ago. Glad to see Horta posting again, because I felt terrible about how things went down for you. I am just so sick of the dark side of this industry... Photonis have their own flavor of Gen3 tech too, not to mention their Multialkali stuff that sees out of band up to around... Well, no one is really sure. I've heard figures as high as 1300 nm. Officially it's 1100nm. But I think tubes have about another 30 years before they'll be matched. Meanwhile places like India, Pakistan, Turkey, Taiwan, etc. Anywhere they make chips... I reckon all those places will go SWIR or Thermal, because they can't catch up with intensifiers. Europe will still use Intensifiers as will The US. China may split both ways. Australia will probably go back to Flashlights. India is the place to watch to see how the future will unfold. They are struggling for some most units to have any night capability at all, even active. As such I think they'll be the general indicate for that part of the world. David. |

I have noticed a change, as of late myself. But to the OP, I have found the average shelf-life of a "hobbyist" is about 4 years. This is everything from jumping, diving, climbing- anything you care to mention really. People get bored and move on. I would guess the same thing about NV.
Now the kicker is the related drama when you go to these on-line websites. Because we're all not sitting in the same room, like a local club or something, you don't know who you're talking to a lot of times. Instead of just sharing our love of the sport or whatever, you get this competition bullshit that creeps in. Vendors will oftentimes be the main-movers behind these things, because they have a vested interest in seeing peeps educated about it. Competition between vendors heats up. Guys will motherfuck one vendor all day long, and/or pimp out the next guy they happen to like. Or whatever. Point being, lots of folks see this shit, and in addition to growing bored of the hobby, are turned off by all the dickering. This last point is due to the very nature of the beast. People say all sorts of shit they wouldn't say directly to your face. And if they did, I think lots of times it would go kinetic, and a) maybe have a little more respect for each other, after knocking the shit out of each other, and b) maybe STFU already before it goes all MMA again. So between these two things, I think you will see a turnover on any site such as this. But I have also seen a regeneration, of sorts, on different sites, if peeps put in the effort, like you see here. So maybe this is just the natural ebb and flow of this medium. I myself have learned much from this site, and although I've faded away and returned, I'd like to see it return to a more information-heavy site and de-emphasize the vendor comp. Oh and of course, world peace. |
