So I've come up with a bit of an oddball gunsmithing project idea, and I'd like to get some feedback from experienced gunsmiths. Basically the idea of the project is this:
Take a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan chambered in 454 Casull, and cut it for moon clips to accept 45 Winchester Magnum cartridges. Here's the data for both cartridges for reference.
454 Casull--
OAL 1.77"
Maximum Pressure 65,000PSI (SAAMI Spec)
Bullet Diameter 0.452"
Neck Diameter 0.48"
45 Winchester Magnum--
OAL 1.575"
Maximum Pressure 40,000PSI (SAAMI Spec)
Bullet Diameter 0.452"
Neck Diameter 0.473"
The 45 Win Mag is necked down, so it doesn't appear it should have any issues chambering in the 454 Casull Cylinder. The operating pressure is also well within spec, so it shouldn't grenade the gun. Does anybody have any ideas if this is a bad idea or not? It seems relatively safe, and it would add more versatility to the gun (four possible calibers out of the same revolver). Thanks!
