After many years of putting off dealing with the requirements, finally got my C&R and GCA membership and sent off all the paperwork today for an RM1EXPERT sku. Don't really care if it's Springfield or HRA, just wanted to finally scratch the itch of badly wanting an M1 Garand, one that I can take out and shoot once in a while with a buddy that also has one.
Any of you recently receive an expert grade, and does the condition still seem to be slipping? Seems there have been a lot of reports around the interet of poor quality or significant pitting over the last few years, so of course I'm a little concerned. Went with expert over rack for a reason. Bonus question: Seems the M1 Carbines and 1903s have been out of stock for some time now. Will they ever offer those again or am I better off hitting up EE or gunbroker? |

Reports on service grades have been more promising. I would gamble on one of those than an expert. The reason is the experts receiver was probably in worse condition and needed reparked.
You won’t see carbines and 1903’s mail in. Maybe 1903’s in the stores. |

I bought an H&R expert at the South store in late May and am very happy with it. Took my son as it was a bucket list father son trip for me. I wasn't happy with paying the 10% sales tax but got a case of Lake City M2 to go with it.
There was a rack of '03's priced at $750 apiece but the stocks and chromed bolts I saw were a turn off. I watched a '17 get snatched up and sold within seconds of me setting it down. |

Already sent off the paperwork this morning, so it'll be an expert. My understanding, based on what CMP says on their website and on the expert listings, is that expert is just a service grade with new barrel and stock. Wouldn't that mean that either grade could have whooped or reparkerized receivers?
Going to the store isn't an option, at least not anytime soon. Bit of a drive from western MO. I'll make the trip one day. |

Also they have surplus 30-06 on the CMP estore 400 rounds in an ammo can for a little over $400 shipped.

I started with "I just want a WWII Garand". Then I went just one of each manufacturer to one from each time period to a few major variations to I need to be able to have groups of three for proper stacking. |

I received my expert about a month ago. Almost everything has been refinished, there is pitting underneath the park on the common areas, and I believe a handful of the small parts are new/commercial production. I was in the same boat as you. First garand, wanted a shooter, and followed the wisdom of buying the best I could afford. Everything can be replaced other than the receiver after all. Wouldn't say I regret my purchase, but I'm not in love with it. Ended up purchasing a field grade through somebody else for a rifle that had the been there - done that look.
Edit: Meant receiver, not barrel.

Beautiful rifles.
I'm in the same boat, expert would be a great shooter and good way to learn the firearm, but I think I'm going to end up getting a field or rack grade eventually. The only thing that scares me is rust, or having something severely shot out, beyond my capability of fixing. |

I received my expert grade last month , Springfield receiver made in July 44 . No pitting anywhere. This is my first M1 garand .. I also have 1911 in the queue .

My HRA Service Grade was in excellent condition, no pitting at all with plenty of factory finish left. The TE and MW measured 1.

I bought another knob via ebay from a seller that had multiple for sale, and received that one. So I have since purchased a 3rd knob that is proper. Just not an updated pic. |

Looks like 3-4 weeks based on recent reports in the timeline thread over on CMP.

They've been honoring sticky note requests for "WW2 & GI wood", so if I'm wanting something with a bit more character...should I roll the dice on a rack grade and hope it's not clapped out with rust and high ME/TE numbers, or go with service grade for $200 more and hope they honor the sticky on it? |

i got 2 service grades today and they are some of the finest ones i have ever received from CMP. i got a 1/45 sa with nearly all correct parts and a 1/1 barrel that matchs.

My rack grade needed everything replaced and for the $650 I paid, I chucked it to buying a receiver.
Luckily I had a parts kit that was correct and all NOS parts for the period. |

Well I'm really confused about these expert grades. Little bit about me I've been collecting M1 Grands for almost 20 years I have 14 of them back in the hay day when CMP was actually getting excellent grade rifles I purchased many service and collector grades they look brand new with the correct Parts on most of them many of the rifles only needed to have the trigger guards replaced the match all the parts. Now fast forward I go on GunBroker and I'm looking at all these expert grades and they're actually selling for over $2,000 and then I'm looking at real collector grade rifles that might not be as pretty or as nice but they're not even going over $1,400. So my question is are you younger new buyers just looking for stuff that looks new. And you don't care about the history of the M1 grand I mean I've seen some Winchester's would correct barrels and they're not even going over $1,400 I'm amazed I just can't believe it and yet they're willing to buy these Filipino rust buckets that were rusted so bad that the Filipinos didn't even want them anymore CMP overpaid for all of them and now they're making them into part guns and they're selling on GunBroker again for over $2,000 again I'm just amazed I was wondering if anybody's got an answer to this

For my first garand, I wanted the experience of owning and using a garand that I don't have to worry about devaluing every time I take it out or ding it up, so an expert grade fit the bill...it's already got a mix of parts, new barrel, new stock...I can repair or replace whatever on it and not hurt any sort of collector's value for the most part. However, I also got my C&R FFL because I also like collecting old, beat up rifles that look like they have stories to tell, which is why I'd like to grab a few rack/field/service grade eventually, especially if I could ever make it to their store in Alabama. |

Paperwork for the expert grade got to CMP on 6/26, no updates yet. Really hoping I don't get the OOS notice.
Also a week in to an order at Century Arms, got a reply that it'd be 3-4 business days. With the holiday and the fact they tend to pay less attention to smaller orders I'm probably a week or so out from getting that one. Been wanting a K31 for a while. I'm putting the new C&R FFL to work.

Just got what I think folks refer to as the "DNB" or "do not bug us" email from CMP letting me know they received and verified my paperwork, and that my order will now be processed and then shipped in the order it was received.
