Was in a shop today and they had a Chinese "Chang Kai Shek" (or however you'd spell that) Mauser in the rack.  Barrel and receiver had matching numbers.  Bolt was out of the gun and I didn't ask more about it pending some research.  I'm far from a Mauser expert, but it looked a lot like a 98K in form.  Chinese characters on the receiver ring plus a boxy logo of some sort.  Fairly large cartouche on the stock that was hard to read.  Asking price is $495.  With SO MUCH to go on, might this be worth looking into more?  I'd want to know the bore condition, if the bolt and stock are matching, etc.

Should I look into this more, or put it out of my mind?

Too much. If it was cherry mint maybe but most are well worn out Wall hangers.

Generally they are a straight up clone of a Mauser Standard Short Rifle .

I’d really like to have one of those as a wall hanger.

Most Chinese Mauser's are beat, mismatched and have sewer pipe bores. Unless the bore is very good I'd pass and I seriously doubt the bore will be good.
